Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has given a directive that henceforth no public or private primary and secondary school in the state should hold morning or afternoon prayers.

The governor also directed that all teachers with effect from next year must be in suits during official hours. A letter signed by the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Mrs Anne O. Odey, dated October 21, said the suspension of prayers will subsist till further notice.

The directive which was sent to all zonal heads in the state said, “the ministry hereby directs all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state to suspend all assemblies (morning and afternoon) till further notice.”

All school heads were directed to comply strictly or risk sanctions.

In a reaction, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) signed by Archbishop J. E. Ukpo and Apostle Iwara Oleh Obeten, state chairman and secretary respectively, said such directive was completely unacceptable. CAN said the directive will negatively affect the upbringing of children and urged the state government to immediately withdraw same.

Rubbish move. Is Ben Ayade an occultist? What has prayers offered by pulpils and students in schools got to do with effective administration of the state?

Separation of state and church.

Nigeria always forget that not everyone is.Christian/Muslim and forcing people to pray alongside other faiths is a violation of their rights and also a form of intolerance

Good decision to ban all sorts of prayers in public and private schools. They are highly unnecessary and at best are mere distractions. Anybody that feels prayer is important should pray at home before coming to school.

On the other hand, am not in support of the decision that all teachers must be in suit during office hours. We should be promoting our cultural attire and not foreign ones. Cross river is the headquarters of culture and tourism in Nigeria and teachers and public servants there should be encouraged to put on attires that reflect the culture of the people.

Last time a commissioner to be suggested school children drawing criminals instead of geometric figures, today a likely occultic governor is trying to put a hold on prayer in the schools.
Anyway, Both prayer and national anthem should be stopped at school. But introduce a positive mantra or incantations to be chanted by the students every morning

Will stopping of prayers in schools stop government officials from misappropriating public funds? The State Chapter of CAN should demand the reason for the directive as no occultic individual has the moral power to stop prayers in schools which is part of the students' formation.

That may pull through in state owned schools but it will never fly in schools run by religious institutions. Let them go and enforce it on Reverend Sisters who run their congregation's schools make we see!

CALABAR

RELIGIOUS tension is brewing in Cross River State, after the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, rejected the directive by the state government to stop morning devotion in secondary and primary schools across the state, saying such a directive is totally unacceptable to the association.n a statement, CAN state chairman, Archbishop Joseph Edra Ukpo, yesterday, called on the state government to immediately withdraw the directive as it negated freedom of worship in the state.

The statement said: “Sequel to the letter from the Ministry of Education with reference No MOE/S132/VOL 1, by the Permanent Sectary of the Ministry of Education dated October 21, directing public and private primary/secondary schools across the state to suspend all assemblies (morning and afternoon) till further notice, the Christian Association of Nigeria , Cross River State chapter, hereby, says that such directive is totally unacceptable. This directive will negatively affect the moral upbringing of our children who are future leaders of this country.”

Mrs Anne Odey, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education in the state, had last week, written a letter to all schools across the state, both primary and secondary, ordering the suspension of morning and afternoon devotions.

When contacted, Mrs Odey said the directive came from the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Henry Fadairo, in view of prevailing security concerns in the country, adding that it was not the state government that was trying to stop the age long practice established by missionaries who established most of the schools in the state.

I thank God this is being done in Mary slessor's calabar. One of the earliest state to have the missionaries.

If Buhari tries this, you all will say he wants to 'islamize' Nigeria. So what is the Cross River state governor trying to do?

This is a terrible decision by the state government. How will the student learn the National anthem, pledge etc? How will they have sound Moral teaching? The morning assembly is not just all about prayers? There are Moral lessons that student learn from the teachers, prefects and sometimes the principal. Seems Ben Ayade is high on calabar weed

I agree. Sometimes the adherents of these two faiths tend to take it for granted that religion out not to have an overbearing influence on matters of state. I find the new prescribed dress code hilarious sha

Bukola Saraki and the apc, APC Crises

Apc crises
Why the trouble in the ruling all progressive congress, will apc be better than the people’s Democratic Party. In 1999 when Nigerian came under democracy the ruling party then pdp, was very much united and the party body as the final say unlike what we are now seeing in the all progress congress. The whole senate president is n mess with his party chieftain and the presidency continue to play I don’t care attitude.
We all know what tore the people democratic party, it was internal crises, in fact most Nigerians know that pdp was the problem of pdp and pdp destroy itself,. If without the contribution of key pdp figures like Rotimi Ameachi, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Rabilu Musa Kwankwaso, the then new pdp senators and members of the lower chamber, the contribution of the g7 governors as well continue reading
