comparing BP and MTN is like comparing oranges and apple. BP is a fortune 500 company and is worth 100s of billions dollars. Besides most of the payments were for cleaning of the Gulf of Mexico cause by the oil spill. MTN is not going to pay 1.07 trillion naira and I think you know that. I believe NCC is going to reduce the fine because they don't really have any justification to fine that huge amount of money which Nigeria can't even make in a month.

I don't know why some people are happy over this, without considering the impacts on MTN workforce which comprise 99 percent Nigerians.

I see a massive retrenchment of over 50 percent, if they truly pay this fine. NCC should rethink about the consequence and lower this sanction.

Are you suggesting that NCC should overrule itself on a fine that was in existence prior to when MTN wilfully violated the agreed terms to which all operators were parties?

If this is done to help MTN how would you compensate other operators who complied with NCC's directives?

How do you intend to compensate families whose loved ones are kidnapped (some of them killed in the process) because your beloved MTN refused to comply with the directive of a regulator?

As a blogger, these days, I hardly have time to read other peoples’ blog. I will just copy the link I want to and not wait for the blog to load. I hardly have time to read what others have to say. There are two blogs that I will not do without visiting them in a day, which are Nairaland and Vanguard News website.



Last week, I saw a news on Nairaland forum that MTN was fined $5billion for failing to register all their subscribers within a stipulated time. The question I want to ask is that, is it true that MTN did not register those subscribers? That is the question begging for answer in my mind.



My focus here is not on whether the amount is too much or not? I am less concerned about whether Nigeria is fair to MTN or not considering the level of their investment in Nigeria. My dear friend what is more glaring is that MTN Nigeria is a typical product centric enterprise who seems to have come to Nigeria to make money and not to do business from customers’ perspective.



In one of my articles, I have talked about the manner of approach of both a product centric and a customer centric enterprise. I want you now to take time to analyze what I have said in that article and use it to judge what I am about to say about MTN as a Telecom giant.



One thing I want you to know about MTN as an organization is that they believe so much in the quality of their products and services as a means of gaining the heart of their customers. It is an undisputable fact that MTN has one of the best network coverage in Nigeria. The company has invested heavily in their network. One thing that is also clear is that MTN has the highest data and call rate you can ever imagine in the country. They will give you free data and bonuses for calls only for them to collect it back through other means. I have had cause to use MTN and globacom data plan at the same time. The difference is always clear.



Where MTN missed it…

What really landed MTN in the $5Billion fine is the poor management of their partners? Last month for example, I bought a MTN sim for my dear mother to open a Diamond Yello Account because I am very far from her. I was there last Saturday 31st October, 2015 to open the account for her. I dialed the code and I was told that line has not been registered. That was three weeks after. She told me all her details was captured, she even paid N100 to do the sim registration. These are some of the things that landed MTN in trouble. Most of these dealers registered users, collected their hard earned money, but they failed to upload these details into NCC or MTN servers as the case may be and MTN as an organization seems to have failed to do anything about it.



Out there, there are still people selling pre-registered sim cards and MTN and others do not even bother to look into their database and cross check double registrations in their database. That shows that MTN just registered those users to fulfil all righteousness and they were not using those database to raise exit barrier for their customers. That is why MTN deserves the big stick wielded on them by NCC. They have till November to pay the fine. The biggest ever in Nigeria history.
