MTN Must Pay $5.2 Billion Fine - South Africa by Orikinla(m): 1:13pm On Nov 07, 2015
The Deputy President of South Africa, Mr. Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa who is a former chairman of MTN has said that MTN Group Ltd., Africa’s biggest mobile-phone company must pay the US$5.2 billion fine in Nigeria, because MTN must follow the rules in countries where it does business, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

“We will obviously be taking note of what is happening with a view of seeing how the company involved responds and reacts in this matter,” Ramaphosa told lawmakers in Cape Town on Wednesday. “We would like our companies to comply with the laws and regulations of countries where they operate, without violating those.”

MTN and the other three GSM service providers, including Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat operating in Nigeria signed an agreement that set the fine at 200,000 naira (about $1,000) for each unregulated SIM card in 2011. The regulations are aimed at helping law enforcement and security forces to track criminals.

bro,
if they can ask for 20% discount, that means they can be able to pay the fine.
They should pay up before the fine will start incurring extra charges.

I made a mistake, MTN wants $5.2bn fine slashed by 80%.

Not 20% rather they "demanded" for 80% reduction.

ok...I was surprised when I saw the 20% discount.

I would like the NCC to adjust the fine but it must also be fair and just to both parties (50% - 70% of the initial fine is OK.)

Thanks for pointing out the mistake.

"Demanded " as in kind of order and assertion rather than pleading and showing remorse?

This is an affront on the Nigerian Authority.

Since MTN signed the agreement, the company should pay the fine and stop begging. MTN also failed to inform the shareholders until they found out from the news media. The shareholders are angry about it.

An agreement is an agreement but all we are asking the judge is to temper justice with mercy thou Mtn doesn't deserve any.

Just that ripple effects will be on the masses because after paying the huge fine they will like to cut production n delivery costs by sacking some staffs and increasing workload for the remaining..

Don't be bothered. Because of competitors who themselves are capable, MTN dare not increase tariffs anyhow. They will loose a substantial number of subscribers to their competitors. As for staffs, MTN is going no where even if tariff is double what they asked them to pay because Nigerian market gives them one third of their entire earnings. Already they willingly applied and were granted extension of their operating license. Does that suggest a company ready to wind up?
