People who doubt the efficacy of traditional oath-taking may have a re-think, at least, after reading this story.

Idris Rasaq and David Olayinka were night guards engaged by residents of Olaoluwa Estate at Seke, Idi-Mango area of Ibadan, Oyo State , to protect their lives and property from night marauders.

Rasaq, 29, had been on the job for two months, before inviting his accomplice, Olayinka after the estate inhabitants put out an advertisement to reinforce vigilante activities in the area.

Now, the procedure for recruitment is that the successful candidate must swear to an oath, that if he betrays his profession, he would be caught and end up in ignominy and disgrace.

The duo apparently took the oath superficially, but were to regret it, when they succumbed to Lucifer’s tempting.

It was the night of April 12, 2009, Idris and Olayinka ambushed a resident of the estate, whose name was simply given as Mr. Niyi, near the gate of the estate and robbed him of cash and other belongings, including his phone on his way back from work. They did not stop there. They led their victim at gun-point, to his house, where they further dispossessed his wife and mother of other valuables and jewelry.

As it were, the victims could not recognize the robbers under the darkness of the night, more so as they were heavily disguised.

The watchmen-turned robbers were, however, to run out of luck, when two days later, one of them, Olayinka, approached Mr. Niyi, begging him for money to help defray the cost of his upcoming wedding. In the process, he unwittingly brought out the stolen phone. A shocked Niyi promptly alerted the police, who arrested Olayinka and later his accomplice. Olayinka was barely two weeks old on the job.

Now in detention, the two suspects confessed that they had been hiding in the dark to rob residents of the estate they were hired to protect. They said their arrest had to do with the oath they took before taking up the job.

Said, 25-year old Olayinka: “I didn’t want to do it, but my friend here said it will be only once, that’s why I agreed with him, because I needed money badly, it was poverty that pushed me into it”

His accomplice, Rasaq was all regrets: “I didn’t know what pushed me into it. My wife will not be happy when she hears this.”

The Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Baba Bolanta, who paraded the suspects alongside other hoodlums recently, warned the public to investigate and ascertain the integrity of those they employed for security jobs.

The police boss disclosed that there was a procedure, whereby members of vigilance groups of any community were registered with the police, to regulate and monitor their activities. He, therefore, enjoined members of the public to avail themselves of this security arrangement.

Bolanta commended the people of the state for providing the police with useful information, which he said had helped his command tremendously, in crime-fighting.

Also paraded with the suspects were, a two-man robbery gang arrested by a police patrol team at Dugbe Alawo, on a rainy night, members of a kidnap syndicate and suspected oil pipeline vandals.
