Paris shooting: Several killed and injured after 'Kalashnikov and grenade attacks' across French capital.

Summary so far

As we try to make sense of exactly what is going on, The Telegraph's David Chazan has this summary of what we know:

At least 18 people were killed and “many wounded” in a series of attacks in Paris by gunmen armed with kalashnikovs and grenades on Friday evening, police said.

Grenades were reportedly thrown at a stadium in the north of the French capital where a football match between France and Germany was being held, witnesses said.

The first shooting to be reported took place at a Cambodian restaurant in the 10th arrondissement of the city, an area with many crowded bars and restaurants, particularly busy on Friday evening.

A second shooting was reported minutes later near a nightclub in the area, Le Bataclan, where gunmen were said to be holding hostages. Later grenades were said to have been thrown at a stadium in the north of the city where a football match between France and Germany was being held.

Large numbers of police rushed to the scene of the first attack, a Cambodian restaurant in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital. They evacuated nearby bars and restaurants.

The motive of the shootings is unknown, but Parisians feared that terrorists had again attacked the French capital, where 17 people were killed in a series of attacks in January that began with the shootings of staff at the office of the Charlie Hebdo magazine. Sirens were heard throughout central Paris.

Helicopters were seen in the air near the stadium.

Hostages taken

Henry Samuel reports from Paris:

According to eyewitness, gunmen are holding hostages in 11ème arrondissement inside Bataclan club, hundreds of yards form former Charlie Hebdo offices. Anti-terror RAID police en route.

'I thought it was Chinese New Year'

Fanny, near the site of the attacks in Rue Bichart, told France Info:

People were running away.

I honestly thought it was Chinese New Year.

There were two waves of explosions.

20 dead'

French police union now reporting 20 dead. It is still not clear how many of the attack sites are still active.

According to the Alliance police union, there were two "suicide attacks" outside the stade de France, where the France-Germany friendly is still underway. The explosions took place outside the stadium at gate D and H. Several believed dead.

Everyone was stunned'

The Telegraph's Rory Mulholland has spoken to someone who was in the Stade de France. Alicia said:

Everybody in the stadium was stunned. The match was continuing but people have been told that they will not be able to leave the stadium immediately.

Several dead' at Stade de France

Several grenade explosions reportedly went off at Stade de France at France vs Germany match with BFMTV citing “several dead”.

'Gunmen shouted Allah Akbar'

Louis, inside the Bataclan, told France Info radio the men opened fire and shouted "Allah Akbar".

He only saw silhouettes. He said:

I took my mum, and we hid. Someone near us said they have gone, so we ran out. I was only thinking of escaping.

Exactly! ! Even the French government was openly defending they were not doing it for Islam. Because he is a friend to Mali president who is a muslims. He didnt want to believe those boys killed to defend thier prophet even when they said it in a video.

According to BFMTV, one of the gunmen shouted: "It's for Syria" at Bataclan and Allahu Akbar.

There has been no official comment on motive.

Obama statement

We're going to do whatever it takes to work with the French people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice and to go after any terrorist networks that go after our people.

This is a heartbreaking situation and obviously we in the United States know what it's like. We've gone through these kinds of episodes and whenever these kinds of attacks happens we've always been able to count on the french people to stand with us. They have been an extraordinary counter-terrorism partner and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion.

State of Emergency

President Hollande announced on TV and radio that a state of emergency would be declared. "France must be strong in the face of terrorism," he said. "Terrorist attacks are taking place in Paris. It's a horror, We have mobilised all possible forces."

A police source said gun attacks had taken place at six different locations in Paris, as well as the grenade attack at the Stade de France (stadium). French media reported as many as 40 dead, with 60 "extremely urgent" casualties rushed to hospitals. At least one ongoing hostage situation, possibly several, police said.

Jean-Pierre, at a restaurant in the 10th arrondissement near the one that was attacked, told the Telegraph by phone that he and others were staying at the restaurant for the time being until the situation became clear.

"The gunmen were first turned away from the restaurant, and then came back and started shooting. There were quite a lot of Americans there. It was horrible. We went out and saw all the dead people lying there, so we came back here."

Elizabeth, near the Bataclan, said she could see police and emergency services gathering outside. Gunmen fired several shots outside the venue around 10 pm. "It's confusion here. We're told there are hostages inside but we don't know what's happening."

The mayor's office told Parisians to stay at home and remain calm.

Isil celebrates

Isil supporters have been celebrating the terrorist attack on Paris using the hashtag "Paris ignites".

An Isil supporter called al-Mouhed al-Tourkomani wrote: "Allahu Akbar…Allahu Akbar die with your rage, and explode with your defeating."

Isil has not, at this stage, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

People are killing people for the right to enslave their daughters, sisters and mothers.
