Paris Attack.eye Witness Report by Alexiz031(m): 6:29am On Nov 14, 2015 |
Paris has suffered a night of
deadly attacks, described by
President Francois Hollande as
"unprecedented".
A series of shootings, a bomb
blast and then a hostage siege
have resulted in the deaths of
scores of people.
A state of emergency has been
declared and the military have
been deployed.
This is what we know so far.
21:20 (20:20 GMT) Rue Alibert
attacks
Le Carillon
A succession of attacks erupted
some time after 21:00 in areas
popular for Paris nightlife in the
10th district (arrrondissement)
of the capital, not far from the
Place de la Republique.
First reports of gunfire came
from Le Carillon bar, at 18 rue
Alibert. Witnesses initially
thought a firework had gone off
until people realised that an
unmasked man was opening fire
with a semi-automatic gun. One
witness described a man getting
out of a car with a heavy calibre
weapon.
"People dropped to the ground.
We put a table over our heads to
protect us," said Ben Grant, who
was with his wife at the back of
the bar.
Le Petit Cambodge
Witnesses then describe how the
man then crossed the road and
turned his gun on a restaurant,
Le Petit Cambodge (Little
Cambodia).
Witnesses spoke of more than 10
people being killed and injured in
the Rue Alibert attacks.
Outside McDonalds
Minutes later, a shooting was
reported not far away, outside a
McDonalds restaurant near the
popular Canal St Martin. Reports
said a car was left riddled with
bullets and a motorbike
abandoned on the ground.
21:30 Stade de France
On the northern fringe of Paris,
France were playing Germany at
the Stade de France stadium, in
an international football friendly
seen as a big game ahead of the
Euro 2016 football
championships in France. The
game was being broadcast on
TF1, one of the main national TV
channels. President Francois
Hollande was there.
About half an hour after kick-off,
the first of at least two
explosions was heard. It was
audible within the stadium and
the president was immediately
led to safety.
There were unconfirmed reports
of at least one suicide bombing
as two fast food outlets and a
brasserie near the stadium were
attacked.
At one point, a section of the
crowd spilled on to the pitch in
panic. After the match, which
France won 2-0, players watched
events unfold on monitors in the
tunnel.
21:50 Rue de Charonne attack
The next reports of shootings
came to the south of the first
restaurant attacks, at La Belle
Equipe bar in the rue de
Charonne in the 11th district.
Two men were seen opening
fire, spraying bullets at the
terrace of the cafe.
"It lasted at least three minutes,"
one witness said. "Then they got
back in their car and headed
towards Charonne station."
22:00 Bataclan concert venue
The deadliest attack of the night
came in the 11th district in
Boulevard Voltaire where several
gunmen raided a well known
concert venue where Californian
rock group Eagles of Death Metal
was playing.
Reports said the attackers had
stormed the hall, shooting in the
air. One of the attackers was said
to have shouted "God is great" in
Arabic.
A hostage crisis had now begun.
By now, President Hollande was
in crisis talks with Prime Minister
Manuel Valls as well as Interior
Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.
He gave a midnight live address
on national TV announcing a
state of emergency throughout
France and declared the
country's borders shut.
The order was then given to
send elite security forces into the
concert hall. Shots rang out at
00:30 and reports began to
emerge of the scale of the
bloodshed wrought by the
attackers, with dozens reported
dead.
Other attacks were reported
during the evening, including at
the Avenue de la Republique and
on the Boulevard de
Beaumarchais close to the
Bastille. |
