We Have No Reason To Buy Weapons Outside Nigeria – Onu by Serendip: 8:16pm On Nov 18, 2015
Barely one week after their formal inauguration, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Wednesday, espoused his vision for the country, saying that Nigeria has no reason to buy weapons from other nations.

The Minister who spoke during his inaugural meeting with the directors and heads in the ministry, said Science and Tech Ministry is at the centre of three major promises of security; job creation and fight against corruption, which were made by the new APC administration.

He assured of his resolve to explore the nations’ potentials in science and technology in tackling the issue of insecurity across the country.

‘‘When we needed weapons to fight insurgents in the North East, it was difficult, even with our own money. Why do we need to go outside to buy weapons? When we have able men and materials that can manufacture most of the military equipment that we need.

‘‘India was buying weapons before but is now in a position to produce what they need, the defense industry we have in Kaduna was established at the same time with that of Brazil, but today theirs can manufacture aircraft, ships, tanks but ours will take a very long time unless we act very urgently.

‘‘Our ministry is very strategic as far as securing the nation is concerned. In the area of growing our economy, for too long, we have been a consuming nation; we import most of our needs.

‘‘We export wood but we import tooth pick, we export crude oil and import petroleum products, we export cocoa but import chocolate, this can be very disturbing.

‘‘The missing link is that the key we need to open the door for prosperity is missing, despite having all it takes to be a great nation.’’

In terms of economy, reducing poverty, creating jobs, ‘the Minister maintained that science and technology are vital in actualizing the objectives of the government and promised to leverage on the available opportunities to achieve the objectives.

Nice words. But if only sweet words can work reality.

The resources of all these countries mentioned above isnt even half Nigeria resources. Brazil values their citizens and the elected officials knows the right thing to do at the right time, India though populated can still manage their resources and use it effectively. The problem with Nigeria is corruption and this present government is not ready to even end it because they are already been partial in their anti corruption cases and many lies everywhere.

Common fuel, you won't even see to buy with even your #300/litre.

Outrageous bills by our Electricity providers (even when you didn't see a blink of light, they will still bring bill for you).

Our Economy is so down that millions of people have been layoff their jobs

Boko Haram bombing innocents soul

Illegal and forcefully detention, laying siege on innocent people even when Court has ordered their release and freedom.

Only God will save Nigeria.

There are lots of people who are into this already just that they into it for the negative, only if government can get them employed, trained and paid handsomely.

I was about to say that. Are we going to use locally made weapons to fight terrorism? How about external conflict or even the case of peace keeping in other countries.

The meaning of Onu in igbo is Mouth. He is just making mouth/Onu

grin We wanted to liberate Biafra from the zoo through Jonathan but alas, we underestimated the cluelessness of the man..Really quite painful but as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. #NeverGiveup is the spirit of every Biafrans so, the movement is on.

Give us ministerial position, now you have it, after visiting an AK assembly plant in Kaduna you think Nigeria has no need to import weapons, Mr Onu, AK 47 is obsolete as far as modern warfare is concerned.
If you have plans of strategically positioning Nigeria to manufacture light arms, that will be a good idea but don't deceive Nigerians with petty rhetorics.
