Fans of popstar Cher flew into a panic when a Twitter hashtag about Margaret Thatcher led them to think their singing idol had died.

The former UK Prime Minister passed away on Monday after suffering a stroke, and a topic titled ‘#nowthatchersdead’ began trending across the social network.

Fans of the ‘Believe’ singer misread the title and began sending tributes to Cher.

Comedian Ricky Gervais became aware of the confusing and tried to clear it up by tweeting his followers “Some people are in a frenzy over the hashtag #nowthatchersdead. It’s ‘Now Thatcher’s dead’. Not, ‘Now that Cher’s dead’. Just sayin’.”

Cher however continued to post on Twitter, and seemed to be unaware of any controversy that occurred. She tweeted about the progress of her latest recording session and a photo of her and her friend.
