ezeagu: Flaunting yourself online is a mating ritual. grin The point is that the Wodaabe wear make up and spend hours on their make-up, I was thinking that that is a lot of vanity. When I said Western, I meant in Africa, as in Senegal and all those other countries where there are pictures of people with surnames like Diallo entering beauty pageants, like this lady:

Is Diallo a Fula name?

yes Diallo is a Fulani name it's pronounced as "Jallo" or "Jallow" they are the same name (Diallo/Jallo/Jalloh/Jallow). in the French speaking countries like Mali,Senegal and Guinea it's spelled as Diallo and in the English speaking countries it is spelled as the Jallo/Jalloh/Jallow.

There's a difference between traditional mating rituals to attract a mate from your own tribe, which is what the wodaabe do, and flaunting your looks in public and online for the world and his wife to admire.

You 'think' Fula girls enter beauty contests in 'more western' countries like Mali? I doubt it. . . Fulanis from French west africa are somewhat different culturally from Nigerian Fulanis, but they're also Muslims and generally poorer and more rural than Nigerian Fulanis so I doubt it. . .

That's not true, I wouldn't say that. In Guinea, Senegal and Mali, the Fulani there are quite a force to be reckoned with. in Fact in Guinea, the Fulani are 40 - 50% of the population in the Fouta Djallon region. In Senegal, there are two distinctive groups of fulani, they are the Fulakunda on the Senegambian border near Casamance and the Fulani in the Fouta Tooro region in Senegal/Mauritania.

Fulani actually thrive more in the far west. Baaba Maal for example is the King of Fulani music.

DaRapture: This thread's been a disappointment, I was under the impression of that they were a better looking group than what's been presented. I really don't see what the rave folks have made about their supposed good looks have been all about.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

I know right. I wonder where the poster got that idea from? I know Guinee and Senegal well, and the fulanis there are anything but the constant descriptions of them I see in this forum. i mean it's in here that I heard fulanis are illiterate and live in extreme poverty. Yet in Guinee the commerce, education, and real state sectors are all in the hand of the fulanis, same in Senegal where the toucouleur of Fouta Toro control many sectors. It's so annoying sometimes when I read certain things in here. I am sorry to say this but some people here keep giving a wrong impression of nigeria.

The problem with a lot of Nigerians is that they don't understand that Fulani in Nigeria actually have it the toughest out of any other country where there is Fulani, and you are absolutely right.

In Nigeria, there are many educated Fulani who have a lot of wealth (Galo), but at the same time, there are many Fulani who are nomadic that have a very tough time and I wish I could help my Mbororo brothers and sisters. The Government doesn't do anything for the nomadic Fulani, in fact it is as if they are against the nomadic Fulbe. But for example, I'm an educated Fulani. The Fulani in the far West are thriving far more than in countries like Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad and Niger. Nomadic Fulani are treating like Rubbish in those countries.

Fulani in Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, Mali, Burkina, Western Niger (not Eastern), Sierra Leone, etc. in the far west are doing quite well because Fulani presence there is strong and Fulani in those countries are actually respected.

Where are you from? From your name I'm guessing you are Pullo (Fulani) from Sierra Leone or Gambia.

I got that idea too from the posts I read in here. I wonder why is that though, I mean why do fulanis in Nigeria, and the other countries you mentioned have it the toughest? Also if you don't mind I would like you to help me compare and contrast btw the fulanis in Senegal/Guinea and those in Nigeria. I will create the thread later please do contribute. I have a feeling that there are very few people who can help with that.

Well I was not young enough to witness it, but the Fulbe in Nigeria were slaughtered in the North during the 60s and 70s (according to what my parents have told me). Those who were herdsmen by nature were forced to give up their right to herd cattle (thus there are very few nomadic Fulani in Nigeria today, a lot have gone to Cameroon and Central African Republic). Adamawa and Gombe used to have Fulfulde as the official language 30 years ago (a bit before I was born since I'm 28 )) nowadays the language is being used less and less as Hausa is becoming more prevalent. Most people do not respect the Nomadic Fulani and give them the name "Mbororo" therefore, when most people think of the Fulani in Nigeria they think of the Nomadic Fulani, there are the Sedentary Fulani who still speak the language living in Jigawa, Adamawa, and Gombe, they still speak the language fluently, but the language is getting less and less spoken. In fact, North West Nigerians who are ethnically Fulani can not speak Fulfulde (and only Hausa). It is only us from the Northeast who still speak the language as our first tongues. As you know, Adamawa is not only Cameroon, but Nigeria and Cameroon (Adamawa used to be just Nigerias' alone).

I will be fair, a lot of us Fulani from Nigeria want to retain our culture and our Pulaagu which is what is holding us back from being "Western educated" instead some opt for Dudal (Islamic school in Fulani language). With the way Nigeria is (industrialized), many Fulani don't want to be a part of it and retain the old traditional ways.

ezeagu: Inadvertently, I have become the Fulani becomrich of beauty. This is the last Fulani picture I'm posting. There are some men, buts its kind of sad that you can't tell them apart. . . . . . . .

I can easily tell the men apart from the women, I don't know why you can not.

I see thank you. So from your post I understand that in Nigeria you have 2 groups of fulanis, settled and Nomadic. While the settled fulanis accept modernity and the changes that come along; the nomadic ones are still living the old ways. Am I right with this description? In Guinea all the fulanis are settled even those in the villages engage in activities suchas farming selling commercial driving)they also send their children to school. One thing I can't get over with is the fact some among you don't speak the language, that's rare to see in fulanis from Guinea, and Senegal. Isn't that the first rule of the Pulaaku. it seems to me that they have lost the first thing that made them fulani. Don't you think?

You are right, we have Nomadic Fulani who are referred to as Mbororo and Settled Fulani.

In the Northeast of Nigeria, Fulfulde is common, in Adamawa state it is one of the main languages, same with Gombe and Jigawa region. It is only the Northwest like Sokoto, where you find people who are ethnically Fulani who can't speak one proper sentence of Fulfulde. They only speak Hausa. Why Hausa has become the main language of Yan Arewa (the North), I don't know. But a lot of Non-Hausa (like Fulani) have adopted it as their mother tongue. I agree it is the first rule of Pulaagu/Pulaaku, but those ethnic Fulani are not Fulani they are Hausa now. They have lost the Fulani way. We Fulani in Northeast Nigeria speak the same or similar dialect as the Fulani in eastern Niger, Northern Cameroon, Central African republic, Chad and Sudan.

ok thanks Bandiraawo. I am loving this conversation. you seem to know a lot about ur culture. As for the fula who don't speak their language I refuse to see them as fula That's the 1st rule of the Pulaaku you must speak the language to able to call yourself Fula.

I just realize I have been to this thread many times but i still haven't posted anything related to it. I have many pics of fula girls and yes they are pretty but I don't like posting people pics without their approval I know i wouldn't like it if it's me. Some pics posted on the 2nd page I know these girls 2 or 3 of them live in the bronx and I doubt they'll like seeing their pics on the net. so I'll try to look for some model pics which by the way is very rare to come by.

A haali gonga pullo debbo, I agree with you, to see yourself as a Fula(ni) you must be able to speak the language. I just find it laughable that they don't lol. I just seem them as Fulbe who have lost their way.

Tenala ton!

This thread made me sign up for this forum..I am married to a fulani-man from the bush in The Gambia, and now have a lickle pul futa running around the housewink
I was reading about the fulani women and men when I was in my early teens, so fascinated with their perspective on beauty ( i.e. face/chest-tattooes, the braiding, the clothes..my goodness! )..
My husbands family have kept much of the culture, but not much tattooing done now. One of their women died from infections about 50 years ago, and they stopped after that. Some of them have the scarifications next t their eyes, and some of the girls really really want to get the mouth-tattoo done inside and out.

I myself is planning to have a straight line up on my forehead the day I stop working in Europe. Here, they dont approve much of facial-tattooes, un less your work really fits in with itwink
I already have three lines done next to my eyes on both sides, that was my gift to my husband when we got married last year. I already have much, much bodywork, and my glasses cover them.

But, enough talk, let me show you my pul futa, and my fula-tattoo:
