Senate queries minister over Gemade, son’s appointments in FHA

THE Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Hassan Lawan, to appear before it to explain how a father and son were appointed Chairman and Managing Director respectively of a single federal agency.

It alleged that Chief Barnabas Gemade, former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was appointed as the chairman of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Board and his biological son, Mr. Tever Gemade, an architect, as Managing Director of the same agency, believing it ran foul of the constitution.

The minister is to appear on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the Hearing Room 107, Senate New Building by 1.00 p.m. The invitation was sequel to a letter by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Ikechukwu Obiora, that the minister should explain if such appointment complied with the federal character principle enshrined in Section 14.3 of the Constitution.

The letter with reference number SS/S/COH/20/02/Vol.1/31 and dated Tuesday 26th May, 2009 reads in part: “I write to invite you to appear before the Senate committee on Housing and Urban Development to explain whether the appointments of Chief Barnabas Gemade as Chairman of the FHA Board and Architect Tever Gemade, as Managing Director of the same Agency, both of whom are from the same family, comply with the federal character principle enshrined in Section 14.3 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The meeting will hold on Tuesday 2nd June, 2009 at Hearing Room 107, Senate New Building at 1.00 p.m.

If FHA is private company, this would never happen, but because Govt. na 'no-man's company in naija', it easy to stuff them in there so that they could chop money as quickly as possible.

mr tever gemade is the younger brother of banabas gemade not his son. point of correction but be that as it may. i think its wrong as the case maybe.

Fellow compatriots, i beg to differ from the angle that we all have been looking at this matter. What we need to look at is the appropriateness of the individual for the position and not where he comes from. We are all Nigerians and qualified to occupy any position. The fact that the father is the chairman does not mean that he can not be the MD but because of our insincerity, nepotism and favoritism, we may think its not ideal. However dont forget that PDP's policy is winners takes it all.

Only in Naija will you hear this sort of thing. shio, how will u blame him when police do not do 'owo kodoro' to
take N20 from drivers on the road. Similarly he wouldn't hide his ignorance and stupidity in appointing his son
as MD of same agency.

Though i know it's wrong to have a situation as this (father & son) in the same FG parastatal as Chairman & MD especially when its not in tandem with theFederal Character Commision policies.

But comparing OBJ and his daughter thing as a PDP affair, i beg to differ, isn't only a nigerian affair. I'd say its a thing common to the rich and powerful (some, not all) in every society. Asides from the fact that the nature of their public offices is/was by general election. Abi how would you describe the Bush family, who produced Father & Son as US Presidents, and another son as Florida governor when George W. Bush himself was Texas governor b4 becoming president. Abi how would you also describe Bill Clinton who was president and his wife was 1st Lady, and then became a Senator when her husband left office, and even contested to become US President, and still managed to get appointed as US Seceretary of State. Examples like this abound all over the world in public office and business.

Terver Gemade is not the son of Barnabbas though they are brothers. It is note worthy to note that Terver Gemade has been working in FHA for quite some time and progressed gradually to the position he is occupying today. The appointment of Barnabbas Gemade as Board Chairman was purely a political appointment, no need to blame any of them. It is only in Naija where poverty reigns supreme that people have time for such idle gossip. Moreover Bush Jnr. and Snr. were papa and pikin-for U.S.A.!!!

Worse things have been known to have happened in Nigeria, so I am not really surprised.
