There is nothing like evil spirit or evil course.

Just like you can't prove that spirits exist, likewise you can't disprove them.  lipsrsealed
There are disciplines dedicated to studying paranormal phenomena, e.g. parapsychology. Even they haven't been able to disprove (nor prove) that supernatural phenomena exist.

When will all these madness stop in Nigeria?
Sapeleguy, you come across as though you might be educated, but you seem to be playing stupid all in the name of showing support for some old-age culture and tradition. There is nothing wrong in upholding some things from our cultures, but do we have to remain backward and allow medieval values to deprive us of development and civilization?
I am still yet to read any rational / objective arguments from you as to how this measure from the Oba will contribute to the well-being of the Edo people. So long you are not forth-coming with such, this only makes it more obvious that this measure is crap.

culture and tradition MUST be respected. It is these modernity that is responsible for our problems, family disunity, immorales, early death and other things. If Benin donot want exposure of palm whatever in their kingdom, you abide by that dictates or please find another place to stay.
These modern day fever will erode our basic existence especially because our ideologies are not yet fashioned to that.
Re: Superstitious Ban Of Palm Fruits By Oba by SapeleGuy: 4:33pm On May 31, 2009
Just before the courts gave the verdict on the Oshiomole v Osunbor case the royal court called for several days fasting and prayer to avert bloodshed in the state. Nobody questioned that edict.

As the head of the Holy Arousa Church, the royal court has a right to issue any edict that they feel will benefit their kingdom.

What is sad is the stupendous hypocrisy displayed by some of you over this alledged incident. This edict has not hurt or killed anyone, neither did the royal court say it was to prevent road accidents.
On the other hand the Okija shrine continues to claim human sacrifices on a daily basis. Despite the documented evidence of atrocities at this shrine nobody was prosecuted.

Religion defies logic, when we have had the courage to sort out Okija et al  then we can criticise palm bunches, until then stop your double standards.
Re: Superstitious Ban Of Palm Fruits By Oba by komekn(m): 4:37pm On May 31, 2009
This command from a non governmental authority has no legal basis and is not enforceable by legal authority and in that respect not lawful. However, it is indicative of a whole section of people who are held in the captivity of things not known but believed to have controlling influences over thier fate, suceess, destiny, health etc, etc.

This view point is not without credence, in all my travels across Nigeria I have never known a city at which at almost every road junction minor and major, you will have a fetish sacrifice of sorts, that city  sadly is Benin-city.

Bishop Idahosa was one of the forerunner’ s of Jesus in that city bringing the light of God, however it seems that darkness is now rearing its head, this city is clearly waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God, to be light and salt. Where are the modern day Joshua’s, Esther’s, Deborah’s and Elisha’s in Benin?

As for spiritual things, nothing absolutely nothing pass God, who are these small, small, demons without portfolio holding a whole people in fear. Some have decided to worship them, remember righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Tradition in my humble opinion is the inheritance of stagnation based on continued practice not reason or rationality but unquestioned long standing habit, it simply is the dead way of doing things. That does not mean that all tradition is bad or dead, it becomes dead or bad if we fail to question its purpose, contribution and relevance to existing norms, values and practices in society.

Let’s not use the superficial to mask the substance of what is presented to us here by calling it mere superstition it goes much, much deeper. Let the righteous sons speak up. sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad shocked sad

This is just tradition and should be respected. I actually don't believe all that, but we must respect tradition.
We cannot claim to be like the whites with no heritage.
For a kid to come online and begin to abuse a traditional ruler, irrespective of his tribe, is terrible.
People should shut up if they have nothing to say. Not everything is a joke.

Here we go with the retrogressive Nigerian mentality. If someone believes the ''law'' is ridiculous, why not educate them on the merits of such ''law'' instead of this barrage of infantile drivel?

If the Oba does something that defies reason, whether or not it is tradition, he should be called on it. There are some tribes in Africa where sodomy is part of their tradition. Young boys have to perform MouthAction on older men, and are sodomized,  that is a rite of passage into manhood. Should they not be condemned because it is tradition?

A stupid law is a stupid law,  whether or not it is tradition. You can curse from now till the end of time, it is still a ridiculous law.

Please don't come on and quote vague urban myths. Name the country and ethnic nationality and provide evidence. I am willing to bet you what you have described is not sanctioned by any culture or tradition. It is criminality and child abuse, pure and simple.

Why not ask Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism to justify their religious beliefs?

This religious practice has always been in existence, more importantly it is not hurting anybody so find another crusade.

The problem is people don't listen. I did not quarrel with others who found the law ridiculous.
I'm pissed that one little female has the guts to query the Oba's literacy level.
Her worthless generation are not worthy to stand face to face with the monarch.

I personally don't believe in superstition and find the law funny. That doesn't give me the right to disrespect any trad ruler.
Even if he is an Igwe, Ooni, Sultan. Its wrong to despice the wisdom of the old irrespective of how illogical it sounds.

@gaggi & nawah1980, I am glad one of you fool, mentioned it to osisi that thanks to modernity. Yea, cool we give thank to modernity, because it gives us the opportunity to see behind a close door.
You said somebody insults your king and you are about to die, y'all need to go to hell. Search on the internet and see what Lord Lugard says or wrote about your kings and Africans as a whole. Who brought monarch to the world? It's also a western tradition if you don't know. Monarchy is a mathematical calculation or byproduct of western tricks to colonize.
When they came to Nigeria, the northern and southwestern concurred with them immediately without rebellion, the eastern part of Nigeria recoiled because it's strange to them. Why one would be a king on them to maintain order and command of British masters. British met rebellion in China, India and among popular Indian tribes in North America called Navajo, institution of monarch hierarchy spoilt their tradition up till today.
The Yorubas elites and kings played British along the line because of early exposure to education and got punished and Ibos because of ACT OF REBELLION got punish too. But Hausas due to their blandness nature, not all of them anyway. Dance to the every tune of British music, were rewarded at the end of the day, because Lord Lugard called them the King and they are born to rule, either go to school or not. Consequently, he lampooned all Africans in his book titled "lord lugard justifies imperialism and indirect rule in Africa." He said we "Africans" are so inferior and he justified their imperialism on us.

@gaggi & nawah1980, I am still waiting on to know how many honorary degrees did Oba of Benin have? Because if he truly went to school, he won't be sitting on royalties and he might have invented or discovered things to help improve the quality of life in that kingdom.

Like I said early I don't belief in "FEAR". That is what Lord Lugard called the remote controls for all Africans, because we had been instilled with fears and premonition of debunking tradition and myths. Which he said would forever remain in the heart of born and unborn Africans for generations.

I belief in culture so much, but if you want to be a king which is not necessary. You already know your main priority is to exhibit culture not sitting on royalty that is meant to be used for the empowerment of poor populace or interfering in government. There should be avenue to celebrate and exhibit culture and put it into teaching our kids right from the kindergarten level up to our tertiary institutions. We never heard from the so called kings what happened to our ancestors and how did they live during their lifetime and what artifacts did they leave behind. The Oba palace supposes to be a friendly environment for its subjects but it's on the opposite. After all, common people do enter and walk around "White House" in USA

Last two years, the queen of England wanted to visit USA and America media took opinion polls about her visiting, they got a shocking reports:
Out of 100% of people who took part in the polls, 91% says what is coming to do that they don't belief in that practice; after all, "George Washington" the first American president had the right to be a king but put common people feeling into practice and says no monarchy, that democracy has come to stand.
I know three importance of Palm date or tree, but never heard of any abomination against it till when Oba of Benin came in with this one. LMAO, if Oyinbos read this now, they will be laughing at us again
1) You can use it to make gins
2) You can you it to make food, like when you marinate Bacon in date, it tastes good trust me. But that’s common with Spanish dishes
3) You can you the leaves to cure leprosy.

@gaggi & nawah1980, I know you will ask me to apologize too or pay homage to your king. I won’t because fear has been removed from my heart. I just want to let you know that modernity is a threat to monarch.

Why Nigeria is so drained? Because of stupid law and order just like this. We have over one thousand Nigerians that made breakthrough just in USA only not to talk about all around the world. But the question is why are we so back behind with all our human power and resource? The same answer as above.
If there is transparent and good policies; the inventors and brilliant Nigerians both home and Diaspora will come together to help us.
Just to name few Nigerians:
1) Philips Emeagwali invented the fastest computer (of Ibo tribe)
2) Jelani Aliyu designed the state-of-the-art electrical car called Chevy Volt (of Hausa tribe)
3) Kayode Olukoya of Stanford University invented the Intel fastest computer chips (of Yoruba tribe)
4) Sanya Ojikutu has received provisional patent from the United States Patent and Trademark office for a new electronic device he designed called sharebud earpiece. It is not easy to get a patent in USA. Even African American greatest inventor “George Washington Carver had more than 3 dozens of inventions; he was only granted two patents.
I guess I can rest my case, Yoruba adage says ti a bani ki a tori awi jare, ito atan ni enu means if you want to talk for opportunity to be relevant the saliva might as well dried up in your mouth.

@gaggi. Don't put the fear of GUN in anybody. I ain't gonna lie I got two guns mutherfucker, I got my 45' and I got me 9mm. I could walk any forbidden land on the face of earth when I got my fully loaded clips. I don't hurt people with my guns. I just got 'em shitz for my protection.
You said oni, eze and sultan; who is that? I know of president, governors and counselors.
Abacha looted more than $10 billion dollars that’s all we hear, you think it's only did all that he called all the kings to come and take their shares and told them to forget about their subjects that there are poor and novice. There after, the kings started fighting one another because their pocket is full, what remains is the clash of the titans, battle for supremacy and power and forgot to use their mantle of leadership for the betterment of their people.

We want democracy for all, where there would be no preferential treatment for nobody except you earn it. It's only in Nigeria I have seen son of king killing somebody and people boost to say he's a son of king let him go. Let overhaul our legistrative patterns to reflect honesty and characteristically will to serve people. If you have served in government and one way or the other and you found guilty of corruption you should face more than a decade in prison. Let get the example from the South Korean former president Roh Moo-Hyun, he was indicted for $6m kickbacks. $6m is a chicken changes to just Local government chairman in Nigeria.
The day every leader and head of government parrastatals start accounting for he or she does is when Nigeria will turn a page.
Let there be a constant electricity to foster businesses
Let there be reliable basic infrastructure and social amenities
Let there be universal form of Identification for everybody (to differentiate foreigners from indigenes and know how many mouthes to be fed)
Let there be compulsory education to secondary level to our kids
Let there be comprehensive tax reform, government check and balance in spending tax payer money and willingness to empower the populace ( Loan populace money to do business without collateral or cumbersome interest rate will push majority out of poverty line).
If poverty is out of our problems the rest is minimal. I warn when we kick poverty out of our way of life a lot of loop holes will be open about fear and belief.
If a poor man could develop hypertension because he was traveling from ORE to Benin city with just 30km, armed himself just 15,000 naira, and fear because of bad road not to have accident or armed robber not to snatch the money away from him. If government put good roads and security and create effective channel for trading there would be no cost for alarm.
I flew airplanes uncountable times you will not see anybody open their mouth to pray or ride in Greyhound buses no body will pray because government had set the precedents and guidelines to fly and drive, you will never pass the speed limit to drive or fly and that greatly reduce the dead toll on road or in the air.
Just few things like this can jump start our economy to realize vision 2020.
If our government can put this into perspective, we shall rejoice all round success when we celebrate vision 2020.
