The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASASA) has banned all television programmes about “miracles” by the Believers LoveWorld Incorporated, (a.k.a Christ Embassy) headed by pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

According to a report in The Cape Times, the regulatory body on Wednesday ordered that the “faith healing” programme anchored by Mr. Oyakhilome be pulled down from E.tv on the grounds that the miracles and healing could not be substantiated.

The Cape Times reported that the ruling came after a group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) petitioned ASASA in 2009 that the programme be pulled down from the airwaves. The action campaign came forward after a woman in Cape Town stopped her tuberculosis medication after she claimed she had been “cured” by the church, but died later.

According to Nathan Geffen of TAC, the programme was destroying people’s lives based on the unsubstantiated miracle claims.

The 24 minutes “faith healing” programme which the church pays about N55m for runs on the network for 52 weeks, and claims to cure AIDS, cancer and other terminal illnesses.

The regulatory body argued in its ruling that the programme was essentially an Ad since it promoted cure by faith, adding that this is against its regulation since the church was not registered with the Medicines Control Council to make such claims.

In 2004, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned all programmes depicting unverified miracles and healing on television.

The Atmosphere of Miracles anchored by Mr. Oyakhilome was affected by the ban. ATM which ran through the week and on about 20 TV stations was replaced by LoveWorld and a programme on the pastor’s teachings.

When NEXT contacted the help lines of the church in Lagos, the reporter was told to send a mail which was not replied to as at press time.

However, the attorney for the church, Sean Sim, told the Cape Times that the church did not contravene any advertising code by running the programme and stated that Christ Embassy will appeal the ruling by the ASASA.

I can't believe this is going on in naija. Some religious eggheads dissipating their energy on just one "Pastor Chris" out of over 46,865 others, resident in Nigeria according CAN estimate and a further 1,732 operating abroad as of December 31, 2010.

Frankly, It doesn't make a difference to some of us who are matured and independent christians whether Pastor Chris is still engaged to the wife or not. Not a single document is in any law court indicating their seperation not divorce. So, legally and technically, they're a married couple still whether the world perceives otherwise or not.

I've read a lot of trash about him and some other men of God but common sense tells me as is with the press world over; 99.999 of such expose end up in my trash can, where it rightfully belongs!

Come to think of it; the wife has been operating from the UK for the last 17 years or so and in this time interval not one single female member of his ministry (on all six continents and straddling over a 120 countries) had lodged a civil suite for rape nor claimed sexual assault against him and his ministry. My take on this? either the man is truly of God or he's pretty good at cover ups - and I doubt the latter school of thought given our Global Information Village Syndrom and internet savvy age.
