Palm kernel oil extracting business is one small scale business young Nigerian entrepreneurs can engage in with minimum capital outlay and handsome return on investment.

The cost of establishing a small scale palm kernel oil extracting business is very affordable, the raw materials readily available all year round and the finished products sell like hot cake. Young entrepreneurs and the unemployed youth should embrace the idea of starting this viable and profitable enterprise as one could be earning more than an average bank manager if one should start and efficiently run this business of palm kernel oil extracting enterprise.

Let us serialize in simple terms the viability and profitability of this business on a small scale and for ease of understanding.

The process of crushing palm kernel nuts will result in producing palm kernel oil, palm kernel cake and palm kernel sludge.
The main market for these products are {1} the vegetable oil companies and soap/chemical industries for palm kernel oil PKO
{2} animal feeds companies and exporters markets for palm kernel cake PKC and {3} local women and others who reprocess sludge to further extract black oil and piggery farmers

The norm in the industry is between 40% and 45% extraction rate for PKO, 50% and 55% for PKC and 1% and 2% for sludge.

Given 25 tons of palm kernel nuts, the yield should be 10 tons of PKO, 13.75 tons of PKC and 0.5 tons of sludge.

The raw materials which is palm kernel nuts is generally available through out the southern part of Nigeria. It is not difficult to source. There is virtually no state in the southern part of this country where you do not have oil palm trees. However, we could link any interested investor to suppliers of palm kernel nuts on request.

Lets look at the profitability of this business

Given the cost of one ton of Palm Kernel Nuts of N75,000 today at our market,
25 tons of PKN delivered to factory would cost N1,875,000

After processing we shall realize 10 tons of Palm Kernel Oil, PKO, 13.5 tons of Palm Kernel cake PKC and .5 tons of Sludge.

As at today we sold PKO at N205,000 per ton, PKC at N20,000 per ton and Sludge went for N40,000 per ton.

So looking at the total realizable revenue from the sale of the PKO, PKC and Sludge produced from the 25 tons of Palm Kernel Nuts, PKN

We have

Sales N2,050,000 + N270,000 + N20,000 = N2,340,000
Less Cost of Sales N1,875,000

Gross Margin N465,000
Less Estimated Operating Expenses N139,500

Net profit N325,500

With a one-expeller set up, a small scale operator can conservatively process 45 tons of palm kernel nuts in 6 days working week
This will yield 18 tons of palm kernel oil, 24.3 tons of palm kernel cake and 0.9 tons of sludge.
Using our assumed prices as above
Sales will amount to PKO N3,690,000 + PKC N486,000 + Sludge N36,000 = N4,212,000
Cost of Raw materials PKN N3,375,000
Gross Profit N837,000
Less estimated Operating Expenses of 30% of Gross Profit N251,100
Net Profit N585,900

The business of palm kernel oil extracting has never been so good since the era of President Obasanjo's regime. The present policy of President Buhari is definitely favouring the sector as it is no more easy for people to import cheap refined vegetable oil from Malaysia and Singapore. With today's price of the raw material (palm kernel nuts) going for Ñ105,000 per ton at Enugu and the finished product (PKO) selling for N310,000 per ton and (PKC) selling for N25,000 per ton, operators are looking at a gross margin of not less than N78,750 for every ton of PKO processed.
