National Political Reforms Conference by Adetola(m): 11:36am On May 24, 2005
I was watching the the NPRC live broadcast this morning when Justice Oputa presented the report on the Anti-Corruption Committee, where he said that corruption has become something Nigerians find inevitable.

Why do you think it is so?

He said rotation of presidency among the six geo-political zones of the country as suggested by the South-South group will only result to rotation of corruption.

What I think is that unless and until Nigerians take a step forward towards fighting the corruption in themselves, Nigeria will remain not a corrupt nation, but a country habouring corrupt people. This is the only country where you find politicians fighting for their own interest both on the long and short run analysis, instead of making people's interest a priority.

Corruption is getting worse in Nigeria. The more the people of Nigeria try to find solution to the problems at hand, the worse the situation becomes. And I do not think that this Confab is an exception to that. How do we expect people who were appointed by the President and his governors make a constitution that will be of benefit to the common man in Nigeria? People, most of whom do not know what the common man on the streets go through?

I think there is still a lot to do. and what to do is subordination of one's self interest to the collective interest of all. The right candidate for this task is me and you. Let's get up to the task.

I think its another big game by the presidency to waste precious Nigerian time and resources.I'll bet it with anyone, all the reports and recommendations shall be swept under the rug tongue

I think the area there was no concensus are Derivation fund,Resource control,Tenure of office for President & Governor.
But there was majority and minority reports on these issues.

For derivation the producing States are asking for 25% with subsequent increase to 50% for the period of 7yrs I'm l right?

But i believe the people of Niger delta are worth considering and they too should accept giving and taking.

I will suggest that they be given at least 20% but with no subsequent increase for now. The increase should be subject to States performance.

You will wonder if you go to Niger Delta the richest region in Nigeria if this area is an Oil producing area.
Ask what are these governors use the money realised from oil to do?

It's so sad that people are suffering amidst of plenty.

But it's good for the game to disagree to agree than to agree to disagree.

Presido OBJ few days back declared the controversial National Political Reform Conference the "most successful and held in an atmosphere of full democracy and freedom". South -South una hear Baba Iyabo? Nigeria we hail thee!

I watched 'Patitos Gang' last week, where the Members of the gang said that the CONFAB was designed to fail. I totally agree with them, because there was no Legal framework to back there decisions.

But the SOUTH-SOUTH delegates turned the conference around by taking a strong stand on the resource control issue or True Federalism.Personally I think the good thing is that the conference is a eye opener. And the days of silence and ignorance are over.

We all need to take a STAND.

To me it is good step in the right direction but all that is needed is for our leaders to be more sincere to themselves
