We Nigerians especially so called VIPs always think they are the only ones grilled on entry it to the US. Is this a sign of insecurity or what, I travel to the US a lot. Those of us carrying british passport are face with the same problem. can someone communicate this to uneducated Nigerians Like prof Dora. USA does not care if you are a minister, |

Abuja — Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili, has tasted first hand, the bitter pill of humiliation that Nigerians undergo at foreign airports, as she was embarrassed during a recent trip to the United States. Akunyili had travelled to Chicago for her son's graduation ceremony from a medical school, only to return with tales of woe about the overzealousness of some security operatives at Chicago International Airport, who subjected her to a series of checks upon arrival. The minister who, incidentally, is pioneering a re-branding programme of the Federal Government, which is targeted at improving the perception of foreigners about Nigerians, said she was becoming worried by discrimination meted out to Nigerians when they travel abroad. She was subjected to a thorough searching by the airport authority, so was worried why Nigerian could search more than every other countries in the world |

Phemytrend: what "thorough search"? thorough search could be walking through an xray scanner that sees through every piece of clothing u have on and reveals if u have hidden under and a thorough search could be being asked if u have food stuff or any meat(chicken or beef or pork) in ur luggage and them checking ur bag cos the sniffer dog kept circling ur luggage. so saying thorough search alone doesnt make it thorough. |

I passed through Chicago (O'Hare) airport barely two weeks ago flaunting my green [b]pali [/b]and no one subjected me to one single check different from the routine check meted to other travellers. Infact, in all my sojourn abroad counting 7 years now, only once was I stopped at an airport in Europe, and that was even before I was asked for my passport. They later apologized and explained that I had passed through a ''wrong'' place and so they suspected I was up to something. What is the ado about? Nigerians like to hype and magnify everything. Dora must have been checked out like any other person would be, but she thinks her ministerial powers exceed the boundaries of her country. |

I am sure all that happened is that she was selected for extra screening , which is a completly random activity in airports , they just search your luggage and wand you with a metal detector .Nothing unique to her being Nigerian, Personally I always get irritated when travelling with nigerians to Naija they complain about completily routine things like having their hand lugagge plane side checked. , I am thinking to my self have you never been on a plane before ? or are you making a force because you are with your people? |

Be it the usual routine check or victimization, more of these will come upon black people and nigerians especially. For these two group of people will always be suspect due to their own actions. Clean up your acts before shouting. |

I am very glad that the minister saw and underwent what we ordinary nigerians have been undergoing for years. Now she must up her game plan at abuja and let her cronies know that there is real work to be done.  Will a saudi arabian minister be subjected to the same kind of treatment with all the security sensitivity in the USA? |

Obama while he was still the Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party, went to a Sports club somewhere in DC, with all his security behind and in front of him, the lady in her mid 30's at the entrance, comfortably asked Obama his club ID before he could be allowed in. Being a good citizen and a man of honor he provided it and he was allowed in. However, the club management got to know about the incident and they tendered an apology if he was offended. Now, what do you expect from a corrupt Minister from a corrupt country? They are the ones who need re-branding not an average Nigerian. Imagine, all nigerian youths have decided to be internet fraudsters? Can someone tell me why? It's not because they are lazy, it is because there is nothing for them to do. We all might not know how it works down there with them because we are not in their shoes but we unfortunately make comments about them because they make a lot of money people don't expect them to at their age. Dora being searched doesn't make any sense to me, she is a nobody in the US and if Obama could be asked for his ID, why not Dora, searched? Afterall, they don't have any more dignity left in them. |

SAGAMITE: You obviously don't know what's going on in this country. Dora is stealthily corrupt but people just don't know. What is it that you notice have been done so far? Tell me one good thing she has done. Someone clamoring on the TV and in newspapers doesn't mean she is doing the right thing to be done. Talk is cheap and that is all she does. We don't need more talks, we want action and she lacks that in its entirety. The security at the airport can and should search everyone regardless of status after all we are talking about security here. These days armed robbers are not usually recognized by dirty shirts and mean looks. A lot of money have been taken out of this country by the same so called government officials who hide them in their bags and are left untouched under the diplomatic umbrella. Meanwhile, was she traveling as a Minister of federal republic of Nigeria or as a private citizen going for her son's graduation in the US? So, she sends her son to the US for education and talks about being proud of Nigerians and Nigeria and the re-branding project? Anyone defending, promoting and encouraging others to stick to made in Nigeria goods and services while preferring foreign goods and services is a hypocrite to the core. |

You are just so right. If Nigeria was such a great country as she claims( I have no doubt we are a great country but marred by their incessant financial scandals), why would she have to send her kid abroad to study? It just doesn't make sense to me. Can any of those top officials name their kids who study here? Can anyone point out to have ever studied with any top politicians' kids? No one I suppose. |
