How Does A Gprs Service Work? by perry1234: 8:29am On Jun 18, 2009
GPRS is a term used to denote a packet based data transfer service. I this service the data is handled in the form of a series of “packets”. The packets are designed to have a large amount of data stored inside them. These packets can be routed to a large number of paths through the network. This routing method is adapted instead of going for a continuous bit-stream over a fully dedicated dial-up connection.

The GPRS service is designed in such a way that it splits the entire information into some separate yet related data “packets”. This splitting of information is done before the packets of information are transmitted and reassembled at the receiving ends. The Internet also is a prime example of a packet data network. It certainly is the most famous of many such packets based data transfer networks.

In the case of the typical second-generation mobile networks the calls are usually handled with the use of a traditional circuit-switching technology. In such a network a dedicated “timeslot” or “circuit”, is allocated. This circuit or timeslot is allocated between the two points for the duration of a call. No other mobile phone is allowed to use the designated circuit or timeslot during the call. This is regardless to the case that whether any data is in transmission between two mobile phones or not.

The GPRS data transmission standard is delivered in a manner which is really elegant. This makes the whole process much more simpler. In this way the network operators are only needed to add a couple of the new infrastructure nodes. Also the operators are required to make a software upgrade to some of the existing elements present in a prominent GSM network.
