From Architecture To Hand Craft: The Inspirational Story Of Gloria Jagaba by Amaga(m): 1:02pm On Jan 18, 2016 |
To work creatively well is to co-operate with God to continue the work of creation. I got really bored developing my office's architectural designs. Since it is was not easy for me to get my own clients to express my creativity architecturally, I decided to look within me to see what I could do simply but differently to stand me out among my peers with design background. Out of my many hand craft hobbies which I engaged in since childhood, I chose to develop my hand tufting craft to produce rugs to become outstandingly skillful at it and gradually develop it into a business. I chose this craft for production of rugs because rugs have become a trendy interior accessory in every class of the society. With this on my mind, I quit my full-time architectural job to pursue a Master of Urban Design degree (part-time) while I equally developed my craft skill as a hobby. After my masters, I did not return to the usual full-time paid job as most of my peers but further developed my craft skill full-time while looking for funding to turn it into an enterprise.Meanwhile, I registered our company name as a client of Abuja Enterprise Agency (AEA) to help promote and develop our vision. At this time, it kept coming to my mind that "there's a time to be born and a time to die. In between is a time to live for service of God through service to humanity" (James Audu, former NTA DG paraphrased). I thought of how I could be of service to humanity with my current occupation with hand craft. I made up my mind to teach as many people as I can especially young people with the aim of empowering them. Opportunity knocked when I was invited under our registered company name to be a Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development (SAED) trainer in partnership with NYSC. So far we have trained up to 300 corps members in-camp and 21 of them have decided to further develop the skill into a business. While keeping occupied with training, with my small team of three co-workers, we enthusiastically continue production of creative rugs which can be customised to our clients' preferences. Our clients range from individuals to corporate organisations including the government. Source - http://www.thepositivestory.info/2015/12/from-architecture-to-hand-craft.html 2 Likes |
