why cant a young man become olubadan

Kingship in Ibadan is by Promotion and you might spend over thirty years on queue and well past you fifties before you even enter the queue .

what makes it bad? We will never fight over kingship. Anyone can be king in Ibadan we do not have Royal houses , what we have are your ancestral compound(Agbo ile). We do not fight over kingship and will never fight over it.

I don't think it's done that way. If it was, it'll be the recently deceased former #2's son that'll be king now but rather they gave it to the next in line.

I think Olubadans will continue to be old people for a loooooong time

It's still possible for a young man to find himself next in line. E.g if the next in line had already died and the son was already occupying his post nko?

Unless Ibadan respects age above eligibility to the throne sha....

I don't think anyone can be king

You have to be from the balogun side or (I can't remember the other one).

I don't think it is fair either because if a junior chief can be promoted over a senior chief.

That young man of 50 can still die before a men of 93.

It has happened before. Nothing new!

Not easy for a young man to be the king because every male Ibadan indegene is a potential king. Unless they whole family decides to make the person the family head at a very young age(say before 20years) which is not possible.

It is a rotational thing that moves around all the families in Ibadan.

My ibadan pple are so greedy... Arrant nonsense! Can't dey emulate ife way of choosing their king.. The present ooni of ife has a father and the father preferred his son to be crowned as the next ooni probably because he believes d son is so young , vibrant, rich, experienced and will bring abt development to the community. Why must ibadan pple be an exception. The so called Adetunji has built his palace at popo yemoja way back 1991 cos he knew he will become king someday. Just because ibadan kings no dey last for throne. Why always ibadan?
Re: Saliu Adetunji, The Next Olubadan, He Was Promoted 3 Weeks Ago! by Phobia1: 9:15am On Jan 20, 2016
Hope he wil also replicate wat d chosen ooni of ife did by renouncing d post for one of his sons(dats if he has...) nd if he doesnt hv a son den he can go ahead nd b d king. Just feel for d ibadanites, cuz ibadan can only remain dsame wit dis old folks rulin dem. Imagine! at 80+ bcomin a king. wen its not like wen he dies now his son wil take over. Cos at 80+, aw long can yhu stil rule? nd once u die d throne is goin to another family. why not let ur son of 40,45 or 50 to b thr nd u pray for him to live long so ur family name can reign longer? Wetin concern me sef ? smh. like say dem dey hear pesin sef. lol

No circumstance can make it happen!. Unless a calamity occur that the entire Olubadan in Council (all the high chiefs dies at once).

If the next in line dies, Everybody on the ladder moves up the ladder and the dead man's clan goes back to queue at the bottom of the ladder!. And it will most likely not be his son queuing on behalf of his clan again. The entire clan, will meet and agree on a new clan head. Nowadays, the clans looks for a very young industrious man to head the clan, so that they collectively will have a shot at becoming the Olubadan, since the new clan leader will have 14 people ahead of him, who must die before him for him to become an Olubadan.

Jeezuzpick:

Circumstances can make it happen. If not......well......protocol must be observed.

The next in line may die before his liege....and his son installed before the death of the Oba. That will see a younger man on the throne.

Sorry Sir, GEJ was fully on ground for same Olubadan's 100yr birthday in 2014,so your claim is wrong.

yemmight:
Ibadan people need to change the process of choosing their king. They only ruled by very old people who cannot drive modern development for their people. Oba that just died got there at 93 and the incoming king is over 80 already. The current Oni of Ife is 40 years old and already broken that jinx of Oni and Adeyemi not coming together for years. No wonder when Jonathan came to Oyo State he did not visit Olubadan.

The method of selecting and enthroning a King in Ibadan doesn't generate controversy. The next in line' kings knows before his predecessor kicks the bucket. However, there are many 'old cargoes' as Next in Line Kings. Their reigns are always short.
When will Ibadan produce a young and dynamic king?

Ibadan is a land of warlords. Our king is not one of the 7 direct descendants of Oduduwa yet he has the largest unchallenged territory in Yoruba land today.

Am not defending our kingship system, am saying its one of the best so far. Its a source of motivation to the young one having the mindset that we all have a shot at the post of Olubadan or to be a Chief or High Chief of Ibadan land, unlike other kingship system that has a ruling house.

Alaafin was 30+ when he became the king of Oyo what has happened to Oyo, Former ooni was younger when he became king what has happened to ife.

We have an Old man as Olubadan when Ibadan was made the capital of Western Nigeria and don't forget in Yoruba kingdom, Ooni and Alaafin are two huge traditional king, why can't they make ife the capital of western Nigeria.

Do you know that high chief of Ibadan are treated as second class king, while the Olubadan post is a first class king.

You must then support the procedure of having ruling families. like they have 3 in Ife. That's the only one that can produce a young king.

Oga, it is not a Yoruba thing. In Ibadan, anybody can become a king as long as you have become the Mogaji (family head) of your family. They kinda line up. When one king dies, the next person below him ascends the throne.

Do you even know the meaning of greedy? I am an Ibadan boy and i would love to see a young man on that throne, infact i had this argument with my mum about it but tradition is tradition. FYI, every boy from ibadan can become the king as long as you can become your family head. They kinda line up, so when one king dies, the next person below him becomes king, that is why there are usually no controversies surrounding the ascension of a new king and it is not transferable because the next family head of the new king should not be his younger son but an older person. So, if Adetunji refuses to become the king, the next chief below him will be crowned.

honestly... i cant see any significance of having a traditional ruler who battles with health related problems even before acending the throne. Of what benefit will his reign be to his subjects if and when the little time he has to improve the social and welfare level of his people will be spent on personal health issues. I think Council of Ibadan elders and indigene need to review the selection of monarchs and other related title holding posts i.Ibadan because the current system is not developmentally oriented.
The next Olubadan is 80years already .... and a lot still needs to be done. IBADAN PEOPLE wake up...... we need development oriented governance..... not egotistically governance.
OKE'BADAN agbe gbogbo wa oooooooo..... Amin.
