Never trust people who take your unlocked phones and starts going through your contacts, messages in fact, everywhere like they kept something there.
These set of people have no respect for privacy.
Its so annoying.

For example, I have ideas I jotted down in certain apps I don't want anyone to read.

Your submission doesn't hold water.
*I kept my phone locked because i dont want authorised use of my phone.
*I kept it locked because one day(God forbid) the phone might got stolen and the only way to make sure i rendered it useless is to lock it up and if by virtue of technology they bypass the security, i only have to remotely send a command to erase all my data on the phone.
*I locked it because you don't have ANY business going through my Text messages, Emails, Bank Apps, Social media handles(FB,WS,TW,WP,2Go,Messenger,IMO etc), Psiphone etc. You can go through the gallery since i have nothing to hide.
*I have to locked it so every dick and harry won't have assess to what doesn't concern them.
*I locked it so that i can see the picture of those trying to guess my pattern and pin.
*I have to locked it up so that when it got stolen, i will be able to track, trigger an alert on the phone, automatically listen to voices nearby and silently capture pictures of the thief(ves) which will be sent to my mail or upload to cloud.
Your assessment OP holds no water at all.

***modified***
@ THEconqueror @ Usmanspihn, any android phone can do that as far as the version is nothing less than Android 4.4 kitkat. Though, i make use of Snokor rocket phone with version.5 lollipop for this.
@ Fraihn @ Justiceotuya, there are so many "good" apps that can perform this functions. But, i used "CM Security, Privacy Guard and CM locker"-- all these apps can perform these functions. Apart from that, these apps will captures any intruder/unwanted troll trying to break into your phone and saved the picture(s) on your gallery or can additionally upload that to your Gmail. I set my own to capture their faces(that's if your phone has front camera) after trying to unlock the pattern or pin unsuccessfully thrice. EVEN IF THEY CHANGED /REMOVE MY SIM(S) FROM THE PHONE, THE APP WILL SEND A TEXT MESSAGE NOTIFYING OF SIM CHANGE AND ADVISE I lock, erase, alert or locate it.
Also, it can trigger an alarm no matter the level of volume of the phone that time. With just sending the command #alert from one of the number i used for such emergency, it trigger the phone to shout out a siren-like alarm. This can be used immediately a phone got lost and around such vicinity.
I was able to track the location of my phone with these same apps. Just find them on Playstore. Lemme keep it brief.
Goodluck. Any question, quote me.

OP why not undecided

I lock my phone because I use screen touch so I won't unconsciously or mistakenly press what I don't intend to. And my password is as simple as A. B. C. grin

OP I think you should say we shouldn't trust people who lock their phone with complex password grin
