Oba Yesufu Oloyede Asanike I (1982-1994) is my favourite - for those who know his story.

He was so outspoken and the press were always after him, making so much humour out of him grin

Ba'ale until 1929/1930, Olubadan until 1955 and Oba from then.

We can see the trend of Oba becoming a sought after title in Yorubaland. Despite denial from the cross dresser and his goons, the trend is clear.

If the title belongs to Yorubaland why was it not the main title until they began attending Western Region traditional rulers conference and witnessing the uniqueness of Benin Monarch as Oba?

Why did Oba title become so trendy suddenly?

I have always posited that it was to bask in the glory and uniqueness of Oba of Benin.

They just wanted to trend with the name oba from oba of benin globally who had accepted to be under the canopy of yorubas

It's quite amazing. E nor go better for colonial masters. That 1897 saga did a big damage. Like Fulani invasion seriously damaged Oyo, the only empire that Yorubaland ever had and junior empire to Benin that we even mostly considered kilt and kin.

Though the saga of Bashorun Gaa/Gahan weakened Oyo prior to Fulani invasion, Benin wasn't weakened by any internal crisis prior to 1897.

So the guy is a Baale.
Yet you would see these revisionists making so much claims of glory about the olubadan. They even consider him one of their greatest "kings". Which means they actually don't have any king except the jebu king and the oyo king.

So far we know that:

1) the oni of ife was never a king, he was a priest.
2) the olubadan is actually a Baale.
3) The title Oba belongs to the Oba of Benin and it was copied by the oni of ife in the 1930's in a bid to imitate Benin.

Baale is a village chief who is an administrator. They are not Oba. But politics has made many Baale’s to be Oba. Baale and Oba are two different titles with different meanings or purposes. Ask questions instead of making ignorant and silly statements. This is for the ponus on this thread.

The fact which you are not understanding is that all Yoruba monarchs copied the "Oba" title for politics, not just your olubadan.
Everybody here knew what a Baale is and that is why I pointed it out that the olubadan is just a Baale not a king.
The title Oba is the personal property of the Oba of Benin, it was copied by your Yoruba chiefs and baales and priests (Oni), but instead of those guys thanking the true owner, they turned around and claimed the contrary.

What your brain refuses to understand is that Baale is not monarchy. Oba is. Which is the title your Oba has. In case your brain can’t process it, Baale is a caretaker, administrator or district head. Yorubaland is not one small village so each Oba has Baales under him. Go and ask the government what was their purpose for upgrading these titles. Stop arguing in absolute ignorance about things you know nothing of. Oba is King, Ooni is a Chief Priest title. Alaafin is also the title of the person that occupies the palace but he’s a king truly so he’s an Oba.

Good points on the overall. It’s good to see how you shut down the Benin lying machines. grin

But is there any factual basis for your bolded claim here ??

In the meantime, I would have to make it plain to you that your specific claim here is untrue, baseless and misleading.

I am inclined to thinking that you chipped it in in order to placate the Benin lying machines and get them behind you.

In any case, I’d leave you to do your explaining with a duly referenced historical evidence.

Having said that, the following points are noteworthy:

(1) The earliest known written usage of the word “Oba” for a Benin monarch is in the 1860s.

(2) The word “Oba” as used for Yoruba monarchs may be seen for example in an 1845 publication.

The Binis will soon be around to explain how the 1860s is earlier than the 1840s. LMAO!

(3) The word “Oba” (as is to be expected) has no literal meaning whatsoever in the Bini language.

(4) The word “Oba” (as is to be expected) does have a literal meaning in the Yoruba language. cheesy

Excuse me, who are you again? You do not dispute people’s claims by insult, you need to respect yourself. You may have gone wild on this section by crazy quotes and colors In your statements but don’t try it with me. Now, to your comment, because it is written in a book does not mean historically it is accurate. You can go to the Ooni’s palace and ask him what his historical function is.

You are obviously not well steeped in the tradition and culture you are quick to pretend that you know all. You rely on books to help you. Well the culture of the people is not all in books but with custodians of history. Do your own research.

There’s nothing to prove to you because, you are infantile at best. When you know how to gather your thoughts together and respectfully present your opinion then you have my attention. Till then it is a complete waste of my time. Go off.

Considering your pea-sized brain, I would summarize the discussion which should have been simple enough.

(1) A false claim was made.

(2) I have challenged the false claim and requested evidence.

(3) The claimant alleged he was insulted and as such would not prove his claim — while in fact hoping to veil his incapacitation with insults.

(4) Samuk said the claimant (who failed to prove his claim, who lied about being insulted while actually insulting all the way) is in fact the Ooni of Ife — and he is correct even though he has admitted his failure to prove his claim.

My Question: Saamu, is your brain retarding at the speed of light or at the speed of sound. Make a choice! cheesy grin

samuk:

You are now simply speechless and foaming from the mouth. Your normal we versus them tactics that you use to spread misinformation has failed you this time. I have always said it that those that are far away from Ife will be masquerading as if they are more knowledgeable than the Ooni himself. Omo see disgrace grin grin.
Shutup you coward...you ran away from the other thread when she disgraced you grin now you are here spewing trash...ccoward...and have you finally consulted the Arabs around you grin

Oh really! I’ve been discussing with the Ooni of Ife? I never knew. grin cheesy Please tell me more.

Considering your pea-sized brain; I would summarize the discussion which in itself is simple.

A false claim is made.

I challenged the false claims and requested evidence.

The claimant alleged he was insulted and as such would not prove his claim — while resorting to insults.

Samuk said the claimant (who failed to prove his claim, lied about being insulted while actually insulting his way out) is in fact the Ooni of Ife — and he is correct even though he has admitted his failure to prove his claim.

Samuk, is your brain retarding at the speed of light or at the speed of sound. Which one??

What a coward you are, you left the person that beat you alone to be insulting a bystander. You were beaten and said cheers to your beater and now insulting a witness to your beating. You are really an infertile person. Shift to one side, you are without pride and shame.

Your mumu supporters that do all the insults on your behalf couldn't help you this time. Oh I forgot, they only know how to insult the Benins.

He identifies as Yoruba. He made a false claim. He failed to substantiate his claim. He quite clearly admitted his inability to substantiate his false claim.

That is the most I often do to refute a self-identified Yoruba — regardless of whether they insult or not.

I go soft on my people. My only aim is to correct a misrepresentation. I really don’t care how it is received.

I have done exactly that, and it is now available to every reader to notice how his false claim was shut down via lack of evidence.

However, I am tough and hard on Benin liars because they are my slaves who are desperate to buy their freedom using lies and more hard lies.

Now you should catch the difference. cheesy
