Data Analysis Packages: Which Should I Learn?! by obnathan(m): 6:48am On Feb 04, 2016
I'm a microbiologist and computer literare but I wanna learn Data Analysis. I got to know there are various Data analysis packages like MATLAB, SPSS, Advanced Excel and the likes but I don't one which of them would be best for me to learn.
Dear Nairalanders, especially the data analyst, your advice and comments will be so much appreciated.

Gracias

I'm actually in a similar position as you. I've been doing data analysis work for some time now (in a very limited capacity), but recently I have wanted to expand my knowledge, skill and tool set. So, I've started down the path to learning data science, and the information is overwhelming, especially with all the packages. So far, I note two good things. Python and R. Technically, they aren't packages, but rather languages, but that certainly can't be held against them. Python has excellent data analysis features, and R is a programming language specifically for statistical computing. The best thing is that both Python and R are open source. That is where I'm beginning my data science journey.

I use SPSS, EPIINFO, EXCEL and a number of online tools depending on what I am doing.
But wait, I am not technically a statistician, just a bloody programmer that tries to know a little of many things.

Given your field and what you want to do, your best bet is R.

https://www.r-project.org/

It's free and highly compatible with S-PLUS, and if you're interested in bioinformatics, there's the Bioconductor suite of libraries which run on R.

https://www.bioconductor.org/install/

There are tons of free R tutorials on the web. See, for example, the links on the following page:
