In 2011 when I sat for my second and last JAMB, I was very agitated inside me, having lost admission in 2010 owing to my carelessness despite scoring 268 in JAMB. Fired by this anger in me, I saw the need to settle the admission struggle in my life once and for all. I felt the desperation within me. Still fired by this anger, I sat myself down and clearly stated the goals I needed to achieve in my academics that year.

That year I passed JAMB very well and was offered admission on the same day to study mass communication in two tertiary institutions in the country.

From my story above I will highlight how setting goals can help you achieve academic excellence.

1. Setting goals helps you to be focused

Setting good academic goals helps you to be focused on achieving those goals. It makes you restless until you achieve those goals. It mounts a positive pressure on you. After I set my goals on what I wanted in my academics for that year 2011, I discovered that I became more focused towards achieving those goals. This principle is applicable to all exams.

2. Setting academic goals helps you to work more

Once I had my goals written down on black and white, I observed that it really empowered me to work harder by studying more for both Jamb and Post-UTME. In my eBook titled "Ultimate Admission Guide to into any Nigerian university" which will be released online by next week I discussed why you need to always state your goals out and put them in writing. As an undergraduate, you start with setting goals of the grades you want in every course you are taking for each semester.

3. Goal setting helps you to achieve dreams within specific time frame

One of the kernels of goal setting is, it is time bound. After you have sat down to set the goals you want in your academics, you should as well set a time frame to achieve those things. In the course of seeking admission in 2011, I gave myself time frame to achieve my academic goals and that helped me to achieve them within the specified time.

So by now I believe you will set out time to set your academic goals; stating how you want to achieve them.
