Now I do not want to imagine the kind of economic humanitarian crisis that would have enveloped Nigeria had Jonathan continued in his usual manner of dipping his hands into the forex reserves; only God saved us as a nation else we would have been standing on long queues by now to receive one cup of rice daily from W.H.O or UN outlets. Did I just hear you say continuity of those four (4) negative events I just pointed out above? Are you aware that the FG under Me has not borrowed to pay salaries? It even bailed out the states. Are you aware the FG has paid off subsidy arrears owed to oil importers even since the days of GEJ? Are you aware the FG/CBN has been able to maintain virtually the same forex reserve amount that it inherited till date?… Unlike Joanthan that crashed it by $10billion in 7 months of oil price crash? I dont believe President Buhari said these as they are not factual. He was praised when Reserves rose marginally at his administration inception. And of course reserves are at historical low during this current administration. And it's even theoretically stable because of several over protection policies by the cbn. |

Nigeria’s forex reserves decline 15.61% to $29.13bn Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves declined by 15.61 percent year-on-year to $29.13 billion by Dec. 29, from $34.52 billion a year ago, data from the central bank showed on Thursday. The forex reserves of Africa’s biggest economy and top crude exporter also dropped by 2.6 percent in one month from $29.91 billion a month earlier. Nigeria’s forex reserves decline by $1.1 billion so far in 2016 Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have fallen by over $1.1 billion from $28.98 billion recorded as of January 4, 2016 to $27.86 billion reported on February 11 by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Oil prices have plummeted from an average of $60 per barrel when Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves were about $34 billion 12 months ago to an average of $30 per barrel in 2016. As a result of protracted slump in prices of oil and reduced government revenues, the CBN has resorted to unconventional measures to protect the country’s FX reserves. In June last year, the apex bank banned the sale of foreign exchange for the importation of about 41 items. More recently, the CBN stopped the sale of forex to bureau de change operators and also suspended the daily auction of forex to commercial banks. At the end of its Banker’s Committee meeting on Thursday, CBN officials hinted that the apex bank could tighten its forex policies further by stopping the sale of forex to pay for overseas school fees and medical bills. Tokunbo Martins, the CBN’s Director of Banking Supervision, said the demand for forex for the payment of school fees and medical bills is crowding out the demand for forex by the real sector such as manufacturing, agriculture, solid minerals among others. “We need to focus on the real sector,” Martins said. “The pressure on foreign exchange now from school fees abroad is significant. At what point do we begin to look inward? The pressure on medical is significant. At what point do we begin to look inward? And I think as Nigerians, we also need to be patriots in terms of our sentiments.” The forex restrictions have led to increased demand for dollars from alternative sources leading to the weakening of the naira at the parallel market to about N325 against the dollar as of February 11th. Absolute nonsense and lies from the party and government who don't know how to tell the truth. When Buhari overthrew Deomcratic government in 1983, he based his insatiable desire for power on corruption and claimed things would be worse had he not taken power by force. Then the naira depreciated, the economy depreciated and things got even worse. History is repeating itself. I'm sure in another year we will be seeing who will be attempting to overthrow him like IBB did back then. Note that Buhari never attempted to overthrow Abacha who stole billions.
