A person’s path in life may be constantly subjected to different circumstances. But one can occasionally exert some influence over some of these circumstances.

There are some of them one cannot however, control, thereby leaving someone helplessly at their mercy.

This is the kind of situation Ebuka Odebapu currently finds himself in. The young man’s dream has always been to become a mechanical engineer.

And at just 16, no one can begrudge him the right to such dream, becoming an engineer of whatever kind is the least he can dream of at his age. After all, his father is one, and he only wants to take after his father.

But circumstances he has absolutely no control over, are now poised to determine if and how soon he will be able to start realizing this ambition.

His ordeal started around 8a.m, on Tuesday, July 7, after an encounter between him and a bus conductor ended in fatality. The young man, who is the second in a family of four, was living with his uncle in Kirikiri Industrial Area of the state.

On the fateful day, he had boarded a bus from Mazamaza on his way to his uncle’s petrol station, where he assisted as a petrol attendant.

The suspect said he sat in the front seat of the bus, but that because the seat did not feel comfortable for him to sit in, he decided to move to one of the seats in the second row.

As he did so, Odebapu said the bus conductor, who was identified as Emmanuel Chinwe, pushed one of the chairs, trapping Odebapu’s hand between two seats in the process.

In His words: “I asked him to carry the seat, but he did not listen to me, as he just went about his businesses. As a result, I sustained wounds on my hand. When I queried him further, he just shoved me aside.

By the time the bus was approaching Volks Bus Stop, I pushed him in anger and he fell out of the moving car.

Chinwe was reported to have sustained head injuries in addition to bruises, in the process. He was quickly rushed to a nearby private hospital, Church Medical Centre, where he was immediately placed on treatment.

However, a further tragic twist to the tale occurred when, early on Thursday morning, the victim reportedly died from the head injuries he sustained from the Tuesday incident.

The victim, meanwhile had all along been in police custody in Kirikiri. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation.

Odebapu, the second child in a family of four from Anambra State, is a student of Dr. Lucas High School, Mazamaza, and had taken part in the Junior Secondary Certificate Examination only two months ago.

Ebuka expressed regrets for his actions that led to the death of the deceased, saying: “I pushed him because he earlier pushed me. I didn’t mean to push him out of the bus.

The young man also bemoaned the fact that his current ordeal would now cast some shadow over his lifelong ambition of becoming a mechanical engineer like his father.

But how soon and to what extent he can fulfill that ambition will now surely be affected by how soon the police can conclude their investigations and what kind of verdict the court passes on the case.
