It all started In the year 1700, when the Swedish Empire - whose territories were principally composed of modern Sweden and Finland - decided it was time to join much of the rest of Europe by ditching the old Julian calendar for the Gregorian.
However, unlike pretty much everyone else, they made the decision to phase in the new calendar gradually by skipping leap days for the next 40 years instead of jumping eleven days in one go.
What happened next illustrates just why Pope Gregory had the right idea when he chose the latter course 118 years prior.
Things started well enough with 1700, which omitted 29th February; but that very same month, the Swedish Empire entered into one of the most devastating conflicts in its history with the outbreak of the Great Northern War.
For the next 21 years, Sweden was in for the fight of its life against a powerful coalition led by Russia.
In the midst of this carnage and bloodshed, the Empire understandably forgot about trifling matters such as fixing the calendar, and thus, both 1704 and 1708 passed without anyone remembering these weren't supposed to be leap years.
At this point, Sweden was one day ahead of the Julian calendar, and 10 days behind the Gregorian, which was completely useless in terms of actually practical timekeeping.
In the midst of war, wholesale calendar reform would have to wait, and so the Swedes came up with a stopgap solution to get themselves back on the Julian calendar.
The year 1712 had to feature not only one but two leap days - 29th February and 30th February - making up for the one skipped in 1700.
So, in Sweden and Finland in 1712, for what is most likely the only time in February's more than 2,500 years of existence, there was a 30th February.
According to historical data, there were probably between 100 and 200 babies born in Sweden and Finland on 30th February, 1712.
It means that, there are about 100 to 200 people who, no matter how long they lived, never got to celebrate even their first birthday, (which makes those born on February 29 look positively spoiled for birthdays by comparison.)
I wonder whether their parents even bothered telling them that 30th February was their actual birthday. Perhaps, these parents might have prefered using 1st March or 29th February instead, so as to save everyone involved a lot of unnecessary confusion.

The solar year is actually 365.24219 days, this means that the solar year is 11 minutes and 14.784 seconds short of the year as defined by the Julian calendar ( which is 365.25 days - or, one leap year every four years).
Because of its ease of use - and the fact that this discrepancy wouldn't represent any real problems for at least a thousand years - the makers of the Julian calendar ignored this problem.
By the 16th century, the problem could no longer be put to one side. The calendar had drifted nearly two weeks from the actual solar year; meaning that, anything that has to do with the lunar calendar was now hopelessly out of sync with the Julian Calendar.....
