A death trap called Ipaja-Ayobo Road
By Bose Adebayo
Wednesday, July 15, 2009  vanguard

Command Road in Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area used to be a no-go-area to many commuters and motorists owing to its deplorable condition. In those days, the journey from Ipaja to Command Secondary School usually takes about one hour before the road was completed.

But residents of the community soon got their own share of the elusive dividends of democracy when the road was rehabilitated some years back. Since then it has been a hitch-free experience, with transport fare reducing drastically from N60 to N30.

But while Command residents have been rejoicing over this dividend of democracy, one of the access roads to the area is in a deplorable condition. As a result of the deplorable state of this access road, journey to and from Ipaja-Ayobo had always been a harrowing experience as commuters and motorists now groan on daily basis as the journey of ten-minutes is in most cases stretched to two hours.

Many of them whose work and business places are located far from home sometimes prefer to stay back in their offices rather than endure the stress of spending hours trapped in a traffic jam.

The nightmare that has come to be associated with this road has made some landlords to abandon their houses and become tenants in other areas.

Residents of this community always have a bitter story to tell any time it rains in Lagos. Apart from being a major link to Command, the road is always traffic-busy because it links that part of Lagos State with Ogun State, especially to Ayetoro, Oju-Ore/Ota, Idi-Iroko and Abeokuta.

With the torrential rains experienced recently motorists have been having a hectic time coping with traffic jams at Oluwaga, Jakande and Mosalasi made worse by a large gully and potholes on the road. This, understandably has remained a source of worry to many residents in the area.

Areas like Sabo, Ishefun and Bada have nearly become inaccessible to residents as many of them wait endlessly at Megida bus-stop before they would get transport to these destinations. Some car owners would rather prefer to pack their vehicles and engage in ‘endurance trek’ since access to these areas had become a nightmare to them.

Save for the temporary bridge at Kaka which was constructed by the Ayobo’s National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, car owners would have been completely cut off from Iyana-Ipaja and Oju-ore.

Another failed part of the road

When Vanguard Metro visited the area recently, it observed that places like Amule-Ashipa and Sabo-Bada would have been a link road to Igando and Badagry which would have served as a source of revenue to Lagos State government if such project is embarked upon.

Apart from that, the usual logjam at Iyana-Ipaja would be drastically reduced because commuters and motorists to Igando and Ikotun would now use a short-cut from Amule bus-stop while those going to Badagry would link the road from Megida bus-stop.

Already, Ashipa Community had constructed a wooden bridge that serves as a link to Igando where pedestrians must part with a token of N10 per trip at the end of the bridge. “If the community can construct a ‘Pako’ bridge and reap fortune on daily basis, why can’t the government embark on the road project and make life more meaningful to its citizens? The avenue would have brought a higher income to the government if they can expand it,” a pedestrian told Vanguard Metro.

Odo-Adamo CDA Chairman Ayodele Abiti told Vanguard Metro the situation in this community needs an immediate attention from the Lagos State Government. “There is a vast development of Lagos roads but Ipaja-Ayobo needs an urgent attention.

When you get to Gate, you will nearly shed tears, the road is in a bad shape; look at potholes here and there. There is no doubt the road needs to be rehabilitated as vehicles break down on it from time to time. The road is the worst in all the six local councils under Alimosho. The job is not something anybody can do alone; it is not even in the capacity of the local government chairman,” he said.

Another resident, Muyiwa Oni, said it is always a hard time anytime he sets out to work. “It’s something that makes one to shed tears on daily basis. Apart from the hours we usually spend on the road; the stress is not something to talk about. If one does not leave home as early as 5.30 am, it usually takes about two or three hours before one can get to Iyana-Ipaja. You need to see what people are passing through each time it rains. Mosalasi bus-stop is always congested as a result of flood,” he explained.

A motorist who simply gave his name as Pastor said several failed sections on the road have always given motorists a nightmare. “I have used four buses on this road. By the time it gets to a year, it is completely worn out. Is that a profit or loss? Commuters have been complaining of hikes in the transport fare but how do we reconcile this when our vehicles must visit the mechanic village all the time.

No matter how good your vehicle is, by the time you ply this road on a number of occasions, you see what becomes of it. Transport business is no longer lucrative on this road, those of us who still maintain the business is because we don’t have another place to go to. If you ask the car owners on this road, they will tell you they are not finding it easy,” he noted.

“Well, as far as I am concerned, Lagos State contractors are thieves, I think the road was rehabilitated some years ago, and if not for the wuru-wuru job done by the contractors, the road should not have been in a bad shape by now. They only did a shoddy job since there is nobody to arrest them.

They would have settled here and there and those who should have supervised the project and submitted a report to the government would not be able to open their mouths because such mouth have been closed,.” he alleged.

If fashola was in a developed country he would be scored 50/100 not 100/100 as we easy to please naija folk have scored him. The man is more interested in making lagos okay for rich people than. Every leader should face the basic issues like food and shelter for the poor not threatening them with repatriation out of town if they cant afford to stay

Lagos roads are deplorable but people still buy new cars to ply these bad roads.

Fashola's propaganda machine will soon be exposed.

The gorge on College Road, Ifako has been under repairs for more than 2 years and the traffic gridlock there is just pathetic.

After starting to tighten the screw on tax and revenue generation in the state with the reason being to finance projects like road construction he has the balls to okay the building of tollgates in parts of lagos where these road projects are ongoing to recoup monies spent on the roads. I wonder what he thinks the government is supposed to be doing. road construction is not a favour
