We can’t be intimidated, Waziri tells Amaechi

Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs Farida Waziri, has taken a swipe at Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, describing his attack on the agency as childish.

Amaechi had said operatives of the agency are not welcome in Rivers State, in the light of the subsisting court order barring them from prying into affairs of the state government.

Fielding questions from reporters in Abuja yesterday, Waziri described the statement credited to Amaechi as unbecoming of a state chief executive.

While berating the EFCC boss for investigating officials of his government, Amaechi had warned that “we will not allow EFCC into Rivers anytime, because there is a judgment and before they can come here, they have to vacate the judgment.

”But in what appears as a direct response to Amaechi’s threat, Waziri said, “no amount of attack from the governor or any of his officials would stop us from carrying out our statutory responsibilities anywhere, including Rivers.

“I believe the governor should talk more like a matured person occupying an exalted office. If he has nothing to hide, I don’t see any reason why he is shielding his officials from investigation.

We can understand his own case that he currently enjoys immunity, but then, he shouldn’t jubilate too soon,”
she said.On the Commission’s next line of action on the quashed case of N5 billion fraud against Chief of Staff to Amaechi, Mr Nyeson Wike, Waziri said EFCC had not only taken steps to vacate all obnoxious orders hindering effective discharge of its responsibilities, but will equally take Wike’s case to the Supreme Court.
