What Dog Breed Should I Buy To Guard My Farm? by Obanla100(m): 5:24pm On Mar 28, 2016
Hi friends,

I'm in the process of acquiring 2 or more guard dogs for my farm in the Southwest, Nigeria.

Which breed should I go for?

Thank you.

Buy a cross breed of German shepherd nd goat..
It will eat grass nd bite intruders...
The above will save u feeding cost...

Depending on your budget any/pair of Caucasian ovrtchakah, GSD/Alsatian dog, Rottweiler, Boerboel, English Mastiff, Nig mongrel will do the job well. The above listed have a natural guarding instinct and would protect to death any property or territory they understand to be thiers.

I'll say dobermans (purebred), they are super guard dogs.

i dont think anybody breeds kangal in Nigeria, nobody has dared to import one. If you have one upload and lets see.

No point recommending breeds you can barely find in this country, my brother just go for what's available.. My brother guards his marble warehouse with 3 Rotties, trust me no one has ever attempted a break in..

Someone once posted three here in 9ja on the thread "snap and upload ur pets here, it's that simple" by himkers. So please be sure before u make certain assumptions.
The thing is that I heard Turkish government banned the export of the breed but the US are seriously on their neck to relax such law. A breed I would love to own

I know of someone who breeds kangal here in Nigerian. But even kangal too could be terrible guard dogs if not properly trained.

My take on this its better you just get a properly trained dog with high aggression and zeal to Guard his teritory probably a male will do the job better be it a rott, dobber man boerboel, caucasian or bullmastiff all wonderful guard dogs and are available in Nigeria it all depends on the personality of the dog and the level of training it has undergo

Thank you all for your comments.

I will choose between Rottweiler and Boerboel because they are familiar breeds.

Chairman wait oh, so you are now choosing because of familiarity not because of there quality and attributes to detect intruder......

Your choice actually depends on what you're guarding against and who/what you're denting entry/break in. Based on availability in Naija, on the extreme position, go for a malinois. You could also consider a rottie, but I wouldn't advice a boerboel or GSD, what most of them have is cage aggression...

BTW, apart from Olumodayo who seem to have disappeared like Houdini, have you seen any one else with a Belgian Malinois in Nigeria? Seems to be a rare breed..

Very big now boss. She is 23 months now, just that she seems to be carrying a false pregnancy. Mated her 8 weeks ago. No stomach growth and just little bloat of tips and kinda pinkish too. Am kinda confused.

Raise a new thread on this pls and it'd be great if u can share pictures too. If u mated her 8weeks ago, then she shld be due for delivery in like 2days time, except if it's a pseudo pregnancy sha. Also check if she has started lactating.

there's a guy in Kaduna here on Nairaland who has a Turkish kangal, can't exactly remember the particular thread, plus there's another guy here in Jos with 2 male kangals just for security. So it just depends on how much you have but a well bred Caucasian would do the job very well. Get from either bsquared kennel or tox kennel and you won't regret it.

though it's coming late and it may not be relevant but I just want to contribute..... boerboel means farm dog, so how can you say boerboel has cage aggression? boerboel are among the least aggressive dogs, intelligent and very courageous therefore suitable for guarding farms what they were originally bred for in SA.
