Oba of Benin: Yoruba or not by Ola Olusola

Our Civil service Echelon is a good one, even when you have the Commissioners, the Permanent Secretaries and Directors are the real Leaders of the Ministries. I called this a good arrangement because it allows those who know how the ministry works to be in charge. Disaster looms when you do not understand what you represents.

The Esogban of Benin and the Odionwere (traditional Head) of the Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri said recently that Ooni of Ife was a son of Oba of Benin; He said Oba of Benin has nothing to do with Yoruba Obas and that the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy. All these above statements bother one fact; This High Chief does not know the history of the Kingdom he represents. These conclusions are obvious based on the following facts:
Oduduwa was the first Ooni of Ife, He sent his grandson Oranmiyan to be King in Benin, Oranmiyan left Benin in annoyance and his son Eweka was installed as the first Oba of Benin. Oranmiyan then went on to found Oyo thus becoming the first Alaafin of Oyo. At old age, he returned to Ile-Ife and was installed as the sixth Ooni of Ife. Thus, Oranmiyan is the founder of the present Eweka dynasty in Benin effectively ending the Ogiso Dynasty. Even if Oduduwa was a Benin Prince, He never ascended the Benin throne either as Ogiso or as Oba. But his Grandson (Oranmiyan) had a short spell as the Ruler of Benin and gave the city the present name, and Oduduwa’s great grandson (Eweka) was the first Oba of Benin. How could the stool of Oduduwa be a son to the stool of Eweka?

On the claim that Oba of Benin have nothing to do with the Yoruba Obas, There are histories with evidences on the relationship between kings in the southwest and the Oba of Benin. From time immemorial, the Oba of Benin have always identified with other Yoruba Obas. The history and evidences abound for this High Chief to access. I cannot say Benin People are actually Yorubas, but I can categorically say that the stool of the Oba of Benin is perfectly Yoruba. Kano people may not be Fulanis, but the stool of Emir of Kano is Fulani, likewise Ilorin people may not be Fulani but the stool of Emir of Ilorin is Fulani. Thus the Oba of Benin has everything to do with other Yoruba Kings.

On the claim that the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy, even Merrian-Webster dictionary knows more about the word ‘Oba’ than Chief Edebiri does. Oba is the Yoruba word for king, though the name of the stool of given king may differ, yet all kings in Yorubaland are Oba. Ewi is the Oba in Ado, Owa-Obokun is the Oba in Ilesha, Osemawe is the Oba in Ondo and so on. The idea is different in the present Edo state, because Benin-City are the exponent of the word Oba in the present day Edo. Therefore, you do not see Yoruba Kings (Obas) without a title for their stool except in the present day Lagos, where it was recently changed from the original Eleko of Eko to Oba of Lagos for obvious reasons. In the southwest, you will hear something like ‘His Royal Majesty, Oba James Aladesuru, The Onigede of Igede Ekiti.’ Note that the prefix for the name of that king mentioned here is ‘Oba’.

Before you speak for a group, it is important you know the group very well, do not say what you do not know. Therefore I recommend High Chief David Edebiri for tutorial class on the History of Benin Empire for which he is an Ambassador. Lastly, I want to commend the Yoruba Obas for not joining issues with Chief Edebiri. What the descendants of Oodua needs now is not supremacy battles because it will not help anyone, we need to focus on fostering unity among us and live in peace with all men. Half-baked individuals can never rewrite our history.

guy, I can bet you didn't read that write-up. All he stated there are clear facts from history. Oduduwa was never a king in Benin and Eweka was not the son on an enthroned Ogiso

Thanks bro for the above.
Truth be told, every group has its own cultural history whether oral or written. However you look at it, the Benin history of Prince Ikalederan/Oduduwa makes more sense than what the yorubas hold on to that Oduduwa descended from heaven with a great chain. I wonder how people can believe such a fairy tale in this generation.. (SMH)

The fact that the yorubas were the first to embrace western education and hence the first writers of modern Nigerian history does not make the fables that was shoved down our throats in primary and secondary schools to be reality.

OP please forget about fairy tales and embrace reality. It is a known and accepted fact that Benin empire were the first to have have ambassadors in the royal courts in Europe but do we force that down the throats of others??

For those still doubting, i leave you with a simple question: How comes the name ODUDUWA has a Benin meaning but yet no known yoruba meaning or translation??

Oduduwa (odu to da iwa) has meaning in Yoruba.

Oduduwa has Yoruba meaning, Google is your friend. I know the claim that oduduwa came down from heaven has no basis, but you will agree with me that eweka belongs to the oranmiyan dynasty, simple.

oduduwa came from Orun(u may choose to translate this as heaven or sky) thats what it is. however the oduduwa you should be talking about isnt the Sky Oduduwa but the earthly one who WHO CAME FROM OKE-ORA northeast of Ife
just because he didnt come from the sky doesnt mean he came from Benin.... same way u called ur first dynastic kings "kings from the sky" doesnt mean they actually came from the sky
stop acting like benin doesnt have its own myths which get woven into history

lol. but u arent even yoruba and cant speak d language. how do u expect to know the meaning of a yoruba name?
