West African Students Union (WASU) yesterday, opposed General Ibrahim Babangida’s presidential ambition, describing him as “undeserving, and anti-democratic.”

WASU President, Dan Onjeh, at a media briefing in Abuja said, “with a membership of over 60 million students, we are determined to shift the gaze of the entire world to the 2007 elections in Nigeria.

Onjeh alleged that IBB institutionalised and legalised corruption in his eight years of military rule.

“He is yet to account for the over 12 billion U.S. dollars Gulf War oil windfall which accrued during his regime”, he said.

He added that Babangida was yet to dispel allegations of his culpability in the gruesome” murder of Dele Giwa, founding Editor-In-Chief of Newswatch Magazine

He said if sanity must be entrenched in the national polity, political parties have a major role to play to checkmate its candidates and aspirants.

Onjeh recalled that during IBB’s failed transition regime, there was ban on all those tagged recycled politicians under the pretext of creating the platform for new breed politicians.
He said posterity was about to judge IBB for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections.

He expressed the view that Nigeria must be rid of all undeserving and corrupt, incompetent and antidemocratic leaders.

WASU is an umbrella body of students in the sub-region and its objectives include promoting democracy and good governance across the region.

Interesting he can ban all old politicians but yet he wants to come back. cool
