Hello everyone, I just started working on a new project and I
would be updating you guys step by step from scratch to
finish on how to develop a 2D game that can run on
different platforms. If you have a basic knowledge of C#
you could follow my steps and probably end up developing
your first game.
Game development takes time, but because I spend most
part of my day working whenever I have a project, we
should be done in a few weeks times.
I would upload some pics as i progress to guide you guys/
ladies but I won't be able to write down all the codes.
Please feel free to ask your questions and I would answer
them to the best of my capacity in my spare time. Hello

Requirements :

1. Unity3D 4.5 or above (am using 5.3.4)

2. Photoshop or any other pic editing software to edit your
sprites.

3. Basic knowledge of C#

4. Your time.

Right now am working on the sprites and would be
uploading some pics soon. Sorry I won't be sharing the
name of the game till it's done and uploaded on the play
store but you would get to see every other thing. And I
might decide to make some changes and add more features
as the development goes on, so if you get confused at any
point. Just ask, okay.

Some of the sprites. Sprite is a computer graphic which may be moved on-screen and otherwise manipulated as a single entity. There are usually in pictures format like jpeg, png, psd etc. For 2d games, your background, items, menu , characters, their movements are all sprites.

From the first picture uploaded above, you would notice that my animation Sprite is not yet in a transparent background. To easily make them be in a transparent background,
1. Use photoshop quick selection tool
2. After selecting the characters (you can do them in a group or individually) you press your right key and click on "select inverse"
3. Then click on layer by copy, this creates a new layer with just your selected character in a transparent background.
4. Now you can choose the original layer and delete it so you would be left with the layer of transparent background.

Tips: If you are already good with animation, you don't need to start drawing each frame of your sprites animation. You can simply create your character, animate it, then export some frames of the animation in pic format because the game is in 2d, so after removing the background and move from one of the exported pic to the other you would notice it's actually performing your desired animation.

Finally done with the sprites, worked all night. About to dive into unity. I would need some people to show interest before I continue updating, so I would know am not wasting my time updating this thread.

Unity is one of the numerous Engines used for game development. Of all the engines i have played around with unity seems to be easiest for a beginner. So the cry engine and unreal engine would remain dormant on my pc until I probably want to produce an industry standard game. Lol.

If you are using unity 5 or above, when you open your unity you would see a screen like the pic uploaded. Choose 2D Since you are making a 2D game, you could also rename your project also note the location where it's going to be saved cos to delete a project you would have to go to the location and delete the project folder .

Click on create to open the unity user interface, I won't go into much details in explaining the ui, the names of the windows are self explanatory if you have been acquainted with softwares like photoshop, 3D max and the others.
Since we are developing the game for Android platform, click on file then build settings, choose Android and click switch platform.

If you don't have android sdk and jdk, download them. If you do click on edit /preferences /external tools then browse and select the location of your sdk folder.

Next step is to choose your game aspect ratio, either portrait or landscape. You would see a blue box showing you how your game would look.
The next step is to import your assets, assets are made up of fonts, scripts, sprites, sounds, Scenes etc. You can also important a unity package which contain the stuffs you would need. But since we are building the game from scratch, we can either create folders under assets in unity and import our assets to their folders or we can as well drag and drop the already created folders which contains our assets to the assets in unity from our Windows Explorer.

Note : am working on a Windows pc, so if you are working on a mac pc, there might be slight changes.
