what do you mean by better- as in more lucrative? less competitive?, u nid to wake up man! nothing good comes easy, i suggest you venture into a field u enjoy doing, if you enjoy doing it, you tend to be very good at it, which in turn makes you more specialized, and wud inadvertently attract better remuneration for your services.
if you intend doing a Msc in chemical engineering, i tink you mite b reqd to do a pgd first.

i'd advise Lagos or Port harcourt, there are more recognized engineering design companies in Lagos and the probability of being retained is a whole lot higher.

Hello everyone. I am new here and I hope someone can offer me some advice. I hold a first class degree in chemical engineering from Nigeria but just enrolled in a PhD programme in a chemical engineering in a University in the US (in top 60). In this programme, I might be doing research in process safety, risk analyses and reliability with some respected profs in process systems and control.

However, this is my worry: inasmuch as I don't want to be in the academia (I have always wanted to be in the industry: infact I accepted this PhD offer only because i could not get a job in Nigeria), does it make any sense to go as far as getting a PhD to get a good job later in the process industries?I understand many employers value more relevant experience than educational achievement, is that true?

I am thinking of switching to a masters in petroleumn (US, Europe or Saudi). Why? Like someone rightly obsevered, process engineers don't have as many job opportunities in nigeria as petroleum engineers.

Please could someone give me his/her opinion about this proposed move of mine? I can definitely get my PhD, but I am more concerned about what lies ahead. PhD is very challenging and I don't want to invest that much energy and significant years of my life in a course that will only pay back at a rate commeasurate (or even less)
with Msc.

Process safety and risk engineering is an subset of process engineering that is gaining increased prominence worldwide - especially on the back of major industrial accidents such as pipeline explosions, the Gulf of Mexico rig explosion and the like. There is actually a shortage of skilled and experienced process safety professionals in general so I don't think you would be making a wrong decision by enrolling for this program.

As long as you ensure your research is tailored to solving industrial problems, I don't think you will have an issue in terms of using your PhD research as valid experience. A lot of risk analysis work is carried out through universities, either for developing risk models and software, or for validating/testing and improving the performance of risk models in collaboration with industry. The key is to make sure there is a clear 'real world' industry relevance to your research.

You must have a strong appetite for mathematics, a great eye for detail and an ability to discern trends from extensive data. As you know, a PhD is not a casual endeavour and will be demanding so you must decide whether you have the appetite to follow it through to the end - it sounds like you can.

All that said, your job prospects are wide as say a petroleum engineer if your aim is to work in Nigeria.

I am not of the opinion that you will greatly improve your prospects by studying petroleum engineering, unless you have a specific passion for it. There are countless Nigerians studying petroleum engineering (or any course with petroleum attached to it ) all over the world with the same hopes of working in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

There are only so many petroleum engineers a company can have, so you are competing with so many people for a finite number of spaces.

In an area like process safety and risk analysis, there is an opportunity to develop a real niche for yourself in an emerging area that will continue to gain prominence. The beauty of it is that risk analysis extends across all process industries and not just oil and gas, which gives you additional versatility.
