Guidelines For Non-oil Export Business. by BlueK1(m): 11:17pm On May 16, 2016
In view of the current economic crises coupled with growing labour market and the inability of the government to provide employment for the teeming population, it has become imperative for Nigerians to look elsewhere for survival.

Opportunities abound in non-oil export of
commodities. These include hardwood charcoal, cashew nut, food items, dry split ginger etc.

The following is just but brief guidelines on non-oil export business.

Business Incorporation.
Business name is essential in international trade. You need to register a business name to trade with as a limited liability company. Business registration is done by Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria. They are vested with power to register business and have offices across the country. (For more information, visit www.cac.gov.ng)

Export Licence.
Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has the sole responsibility to certify companies as qualified for exportation.

They also ensure that only allowable products are exported. They issue export licence for non-oil export business. (For more information, visit www.nepc.gov.ng)

Domiciliary Bank Account .
Proceeds of international business is paid into a domiciliary account by the foreign buyers. Therefore, a domiciliary account must be opened in US dollars, Euros and pounds.

Sources of The Products.
Information regarding the sources of the products is obtained by the would-be exporter.
This information may include quality, packaging, specifications required by the buyers and the volume available. He ensures the availability of the product in order to meet minimum order of the foreign buyers.
The following are some exportable products and the areas they can be sourced;

-Hardwood charcoal - Oyo state (Saki, Kishi, Igboho, Komu), Kwara state ( Jebba) and Niger state(Mokwa.)

-Cashew nut - Oyo state (Saki, Kishi, Igboho, Komu), Kwara state ( Omu-Aran) and Kogi state (Idah,Ayangba ,Ejule.)

-Ginger - Kaduna state (Kachia), Nasarawa state, Benue state and Gombe state.

Search For Foreign Buyers.
The search for foreign buyers could be done online and/or offline.

Online source includes visit to websites like www.tradekey.com, www.alibaba.com, www.ec21.com, www.importers.com etc.

Offline search includes registration with the following business associations and foreign embassies in Nigeria;
-Nigerian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mines & Agriculture (NACCIMA).
-Lagos State Chambers of Commerce (LSCC).
-Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO).
-Nigerian German Chamber of Commerce (NGCC).

Foreign buyers who arrive the country do make enquiries from these associations how exporters of Nigerian products can be found.

Exporters who have friends and relatives abroad can also help search for foreign buyers in their country of residence.

It should be emphasised that exporters must secure a foreign buyer before the actual purchase of product from local suppliers is done. The buyer will state his specifications in terms of packaging, quality, mode of payment, shipping company to use, terms of sale ( FOB, CIF, CF) etc.

Contract Signing.
The buyer and the seller agree on the terms of the contract by signing. The buyer prepares the contract agreement and sign. This is scanned and sent to the seller (via e-mail) who also signs and send it back to the buyer.

Shipping of Product.
The seller purchases product in line with the buyer’s specifications which is shipped to buyer either by sea or air.

However, it should be noted that that some buyers request for laboratory analysis of the products. This can be done at Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos.
The service of a forwarding agent is needed for relevant documentation of the shipment.

Payment of Proceeds.
The forwarding agent, upon finishing the documentation and after obtaining the bill of lading (for sea shipment) or air waybill (for air freight) hands the documents to the seller who also scans and sends a copy (not original copy) to the foreign buyer. A certain percentage of the proceeds, as agreed in the contract, will be paid to the seller’s domiciliary account.

The balance will be paid upon arrival of the shipment in the buyer’s country after inspection in terms of quantity, quality etc.

I am interested in exporting Ankara & kampala (fabrics) to the US. I want to start with little quantity, but the issue is the shipping, I don't know how to go about that and to reduce the cost of shipping.

Please what do you advice ?

Thank you.

The airlines charge per KG. You or a forwarding agent can get estimated amount that would be needed to air freight, say 100kg of Ankara to US.
Nigerian fabrics sell well over there.
Good luck.

So what happens if buyer refuses to send balance of payment after receiving goods or just dissappears?.... What do seller (me) do?.... Contact interpol or report to buyers embassy here in Nigeria?

Bottom line is, how do I end up receiving my balance?...that's the biggest headache I have now.

Thanks

Do you live near a MARKET Place where common foodstuffs like:Garri(Ijebu garri,yellow garri),dried fish, ewedu,efo,Utazi, okra,ugwu,bitterleaf,indomie noodles,palm oil and the rest are BOUGHT and SOLD on a daily basis? And you now always COMPLAIN that the COUNTRY is hard and you have no helpers;

THEN,

*You are to BLAME for not taking Advantage of the fast Rise in Dollar,Euros and pounds $,€,£

*you are to BLAME for NOT making between 200- 500% profit from packaging and selling at the INTERNATIONAL PRICE on the INTERNATIONAL MARKET

*You are to BLAME for NOT becoming a VEGETABLE EXPORTER to countries with High NIGERIAN population.

*You are to BLAME for (P)assing (O)ver (O)pportunities ( R)epeatedly ... i.e for being POOR

Dear BlueK1

I real appreciate the concept and analysis given by realpoacher. He really explain the processes needed and documents needed to be an experienced exporter of goods especially agro-products and produces. I need to give you more insight on how you can really cut cost and be at safer side to maximize profit.

A competent Freight Forwarding Company will be able to assist you on the following.

1. Knowing the best shipping line and airline to use.

2. Packaging techniques needed to either reduce weight for air freight or standard packing style in order not to be seized by Port of destination by Customs service

3. Knowing the appropriate and essential documents needed. Because some exporter get some documents not needed which will tell on the cost of shipping

4. Negotiating freight cost with the shipping lines and airlines due to the rapport of the freight forwarding company with the shipping companies.

5. Advising on the best shipping route for the shipping plans

6. A good freight forwarding will always look in success of shipping the goods of exporters rather than the profit in rendering freight forwarding services to the exporters.

7. Free On Board trade will be advised for new exporters

8. Trust is the foundation of every international business, let your buyers trust you because is a landmark brand.

Thank you for the question. I want you to
know that business generally is about
taking risk. So also international business.
One of the things you need to do before
transacting business with a foreign buyer is
to do an independent finding about the
buyer. This will enable you to know more
about the buyer 's integrity regarding
prompt payment to sellers.
Secondly, if you have a relative in the
buyer’s country he can prevail on the buyer
for payment of the balance having known
their office.
Lastly, as you have also opined, the buyer’s
embassy in Nigeria can be contacted if the
buyer refuses to pay the balance.
Above all, companies that want to continue
to remain in business will not engage in
such practice.
Take risk; do business. There is no certainty
about business.
Good luck.
