He is afraid of confronting u, he probably is under a lot of pressure and he doesn't know how to face u with whatever he has to explain to u. . .  Is he a first son? or better still, is he an only son?
My advice is that u should just leave him with a good mind, if he is your's he will return - but i wouldn't stake my mortgage on that , dont kill yourself because of that. . .  Life has to go on.
