The late Dr. Michael Okpara was the second Premier of the old Eastern region as well as the second national leader of the NCNC Party, all these offices being preceded by the late Zik. During his (okpara) tenure, the Eastern region of Nigeria was the fastest growing economy in Africa. It is in record also that he never built a house for himself despite the unrestricted access he had to the region's treasury.
