Is It Advisable To Take An Insurance Cover In Nigeria? (part 2) by TyLegal: 3:38pm On May 25, 2016
So as I said in my earlier post http://www.tylegal.com/2016/05/is-it-advisable-to-take-insurance-cover.html, I had a client who was involved in an accident where two other vehicles were involved. Luckily for him, or so he thought, he was insured by a supposedly reputable insurance company and he promptly notified them of the claim for necessary action to be taken.

However, the insurance company was not forthcoming and I had to accompany my client to their office to meet with them.

On getting there, we met with one of their technical personnel and some other officers. One of them seemed a little sympathetic, another kept scoffing and laughing as he clearly did not see the importance of the matter. From the look of things, their aim was to do everything possible to avoid settlement. They kept on hinging on irrelevant issues, while attempting to put the blame on my client.

Insurance companies in Nigeria really need to do a better job at boosting confidence in the minds of the public. They need to sensitize their customers on how to reach them swiftly in the event of any incident and also show more concern for the wellbeing of their customers when these incidents occur. They need to strive to get to a level where even a third party victim can have enough faith to believe that the insurance company will contact him and settle appropriately. In addition, they should endeavor to make provisions for alternative vehicles where their customers’ vehicles are involved in accidents.

If these and more are done, more people will be encouraged to actually insure their lives and properties. Insurance companies may not even need to send their employees out on the road, marketing and preaching to people to take insurance covers. As the popular saying goes, action speaks louder than words.

The matter is still ongoing although they seemed a little more forthcoming after the visit to their office. But it left me pondering on how they treat their customers who are not so enlightened or who do not have easy access to lawyers.www.tylegal.com
