Says no teacher will be sacked

IBADAN—THE Oyo State Government has debunked insinuations that its new policy direction on education is aimed at privatizing its secondary schools, just as it clarified that the proposed partnership with stakeholders would not lead to retrenchment of a single teacher.

The government’s position was conveyed at a news conference by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, in Ibadan, yesterday

Other stakeholders at the press briefing were the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Aderonke Makanjuola; and her counterpart in the Information and Culture ministry, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju.

The government’s representatives said the press conference was called to allay the fears of members of the public who have been fed with what he called half truth and outright falsehood by a few uninformed individuals and organizations.

As a governor elected on the popular mandate of the people for a historic second term, Layinka said Senator Abiola Ajimobi would not take any decision that would be against the overriding interest of the public.

He explained that the government only responded to clarion calls by religious leaders, missionaries, old students’ associations and communities to partner with it in the management of few of the schools, which they originally owned.

Layinka said, “We are only going into partnership with these bodies who might meet the criteria for return of such schools. We are not selling our schools. In fact, we might end up returning not more than 20 out of our 631 secondary schools that were originally owned by missionaries and communities.

Agreed! But then education was free and was in a good state when it was been controlled by the missionaries. Don't you think the missionaries will require lotta money to stabilize the schools and improve the standard of education hence students will be asked to pay school fees.

This country will not develop until its citizens starts addressing issues of grace importance with less of sentiments coz of political and ethnic affiliations.
Education should always be a public-private ventures, so as to engender efficiency. Most Ivy League universities are privately owned . The government only has to make sure they are affordable.

lies and more lies..

How will privatising the so called 'few' schools help anybody. Oyo state is littered with so many private schools already and many are owned by missionaries. People who want private Education are getting it already.

Whereas the public schools are overcrowded with low standards. Efforts of the government shouldn't be towards increasing the overcrowding but providing more facilities to these schools and looking at ways of standardising them.

Anyone truly concerned with Education for All would not encourage the sales.

Sorry to say, but the missionaries who want the schools sold are only after the profit they will make from those schools. The private schools they have established are only affordable to the rich and are going to do just that to these schools as well, if they get them.

Instead of selling schools to profit-making private investors, Ajimobi should ensure that ALL children in the state are in schools.

If so, there was then no need to advertise for private interests again since they are talking about former owners of the schools.

Except I didn't read the article properly.

Very unfortunate that a State Government decided to privatize its educational institutions. That was how they started in one regime and almost privatized the whole Nigeria. I just dey fear undecided undecided undecided undecided
