The robbers abandoned their jeep and escaped in a Mitshubuihi bus snatched from Eastern Mass Transit Company, and drove off through the Umuogbu end of the city.

About 40 minutes after the robbers escaped, members of Anambra Vigilante Services (AVS), known as the Scorpion Squad, which was inaugurated last Thursday, paraded Awka with axes and pump action guns.

Police Commissioner, Uzor Amakulor, confirmed the incident, and stressed that the police responded fast, which prevented the robbers from having a field day as happened in the past.

Those who abducted Okeke have opened negotiation with his family demanding N500 million ransom.

This is Obi's attempt to control the security aparatus of the state in the run up to 2010 elections

this will continue to be the case in Nigeria so long as we have a centralised police that is an extension of PDP

Organisations like Hisbah, OPC, Bakasi etc will continue to spring up.
They need to reform the police to be independent

No society will progress with militia men providing any form of security.

Much as the system is prone to abuse, nobody can deny the fact that the situation on ground calls for a radical action owing to the ineptitude of the Nigerian Police Force that has failed to carry out its duty. I can tell you that a decentralised police like you are suggesting above is even more prone to abuse in Nigeria. For now, anything that guarantees the citizens sleeping witgh both eyes closed is just ok.

U mean bakassi boys re-launched ?  undecided
We need state police;pure & simple. But typical nigeria,we'll dance around the problem for 40 years then come back to the common sense solution.
State Police is it !!

Can someone tell our self serving Reps & Senators to do the needful
I must be naive to think anything good can come out of PDP  sad

Sunny i can guarantee you people don't sleep with both eyes closed in Nigeria. . . State police it must be. . . we can properly look into its abuse before implementation ,but that doesn't remove from its URGENT requirement. Why engage a rag-tag band of vigilantes when u can have a properly trained & equipped police force. How can Onovo manage the crime situation in Awka from Wuse ?

Prayers ke? I don't remember stuff like this one when I pray.

However, considering the rate of crimes in a state that the Bakassi boys were able to deal ruthlessly with criminals it only makes sense that they are allowed to do what they do best.

Who wouldn't want a safe environment? Who would like to live in a constant state of fear just because our police cannot guarantee security.

And come to think of it this might be a good way to practice true federalism.

Anambra relaunches Bakassi, armed robbers and kidnappers flee to other neighboring states because failure to do so means instant death

Neighboring states implements similar strategies and armed robbers suddenly don't have a hiding place and the police will have less work to do.

As jack Bauer would say - anything necessary to get the job done is ok.

Im not sure about handing power to boys without any proper training. All these extra-judicial measures just signify collapse of society.

I remember that 2 young boys were killed by Bakassi boys just for smoking weed.

Eventually, when the scheme is discontinued, these Bakassi Boys will turn into criminals themselves.

We cannot have Judge, Jury and Executioner roaming our streets in the name of law and order.

I agree with you on this one. No need to solve this problem now, and creat an even bigger problem tomorrow.

I posted this comment earlier today in another thread.

I loved the idea of Bakassi when it was initially introduced in the east. Those guys brought back a high sense of security and balance to south easterners; Abia and Anambra in particular. A citizen could walk the streets of these states at any time without fear.
People who had blood in their hands seldom come down south, while those who dared; paid the untimate price for their sins. A notorious pastor; Eddy Okereke and the police nightmare; DERICO, were cut into pieces by the Bakassi boys.
Bad diasporans were inquiring from their friends and relatives back home whether the Bakassi magic detects somebody who has killed a white man.

The Bakassi boys carried out their barbaric yet generally accepted acts diligently until it was politicized. Politicians started using the vigilante group to harass their opponents. News had it that they began taking bribes, witch-hunting, intimidating innocent people and killing indiscriminately.
Factions emerged and the rest became history.

Having noted the significance of Bakassi in those days, it will be cowardly, immature and foolish of Nigerians to suggest such an archaic and barbaric method which could be filled with mistakes and overshadowed by sentiments to seek for security and justice in 2009. We have come of age where we can collectively demand from our government to build strong and effective law and enforcement institutions that can maintain security all over Nigeria. We should demand from the government affordable education, healthcare, electricity and employment as these will reduce crime drastically.
We should also call for the re-orientation, well equipped and well paid Armed forces.

It is easy to ask Nigerians to demand this and demand that because you are in China so you don't feel the heat.

If you were living in Nigeria or Anambra and if you had lost someone or paid ransom to save someone and still made the statement you made above then I would take you serious.

Stating that people who support a measure that has worked in the past are foolish, immature and cowardly is the height of your own stupidity because it is people like you that will run away from a problem only to tell stories about the problem later.

You must learn to agree or disagree with people without exposing your foul and disgusting side.

No. This may even be the first time I am disagreeing with him on this forum.

My problem is his choice of language where he clearly wrote that those who support the relaunching of Bakassi Boys are cowardly, immature and foolish just because he is far away from the hot zone and so can relax and type anything he likes.

Are there too many knuckle heads in Anambra State? Why is it always the epicenter of most of the foolishness in Ala Igbo? This is truly getting irritating!

I understand Onitsha is a behemoth of commercial activities and this can lead to a lot of idiots freely exhibiting their idiocy, however, that has been so for at least a century, but within the last decade Anambra has gradually degenerated to a seemingly infinite source of upheavals! Why is it that the good citizens of Anambra State tolerate so much nonsense in almost every aspect of life?

Can someone explain this to me?
