Malaysia: Nigerian students held for extortion
By MUZLI

ENTUL police have arrested two Nigerian students on Sunday for suspected extortion. The two, aged between 20 and 35, were arrested after two other Nigerian students lodged police reports against them.

The students told police that three men had threatened to harm them if they did not give them RM10,000. They also said that the men had already extorted RM18,000 from another student, who was taken away last week and held at an apartment in Flora Damansara.

According to a police source, a student at a college in Cheras was beaten up and scalded with an iron after he refused to reveal his ATM PIN number. The student was released after he withdrew RM18,000 from his bank account and confiscated his handphone and passport.

He reported to the police immediately after his release five days ago.

In laying out the trap, the police team told the second victim to make contact with the three men and say that he had the money they demanded. With only RM500 in his pocket, the student went to the designated rendezvous at a Jalan Ipoh fast food outlet to meet with the men.

During the transaction, police moved in and arrested the two Nigerians. Their accomplice waiting outside the restaurant fled upon seeing his friends detained.

Sentul police chief ACP Zakariah Pagan said the two have been remanded for a week. Police are also looking for the third suspect who fled the scene.
