Weaving is making; fabric, baskets and other things by crossing thread or strips across, over and under each other by hands or machine called loom. Textiles in the form of dyeing and weaving are widely practiced in West Africa.
In Nigeria, precisely from the west. Cloth weaving has its origin from Iseyin in Oyo State, and later it was reported to have spread to Ilorin, then to other towns and cities like Ifo in Ogun State. The Iseyin people call it Aso Ofi but people from developed cities like Lagos call it Aso Oke because they belief it comes from the hinterland.
The traditional materials used are; loom, cotton, pofi, okuku, omu, kokogun, Biri-biri and Odada. There are basically 2 types of looms; the vertical or the upright loom and the horizontal loom. The former produces wide strips of clothes, it is the mostly used loom. Okuku is where stone is normally placed. Omu, Kokogun and Biri-biri are used for threading cotton and Odada is used for preparing cotton that has been threaded for weaving.
Cottons are first threaded and later spread out, and cloth is ready for weaving. Over the years, woven clothing materials are most preferred for traditional occasions, household and furniture decorations.
