How do atheists cope with their over zealous religious parents or folks?, Ain't u discriminated or seen as being possessed by an evil spirit? Freecocoa, I will really wanna read ur opinion as u are a female. How do the men folks view u? Even ur friends? Am not d churchy type and that has led to serious disagreement with my folks. especially my mum. Once she gets to know u did not go to church, its a big problem. |

You have to battle with them logically but in a humorous manner Point out how silly their delusions are until they get tired of arguing with you. |

It is not how people see you or what they think about you that really matters, what matters is how you deal with it, since you can't change their views. The tricky part is that you gotta be balanced enough to know that they are your greatest fans. How about hugging them? |

Lolsss.... I go to church @ least 2 or 3 times a week... its still not enuf for my Dad... d man wan use church tire me and my brothers.... if not because I understand Christianity a bit, we for don dey jam... Dad is always like church monday, Tuesday etc.. 'you are late', 'you didnt go for night vigil','you dudnt go for workers meeting' etc.... he he he. .... worse part is wen I told him, my fiance isn't of our church... |

Everyone doesn't have to know of your atheism. You should reveal your true self only to people you know are tolerant and open-minded enough to put up with your irreligiosity. The only problem is that people of such attributes are very scarce in Nigeria. When you're around your family, you might just pretend and play along. I for one only attend church at home ; and that's to just satisfy my parents. At school however, I don't do church and religion. Even some of my friends know I don't believe in god and are totally cool with it. 1 Like 1 Share |

My younger brother and i are the only atheist in our family. Unlike my younger brother, i openly declare my atheism. As expected, i'm likened to everything that has to do with the devil. They want me to repent and they say the normal stuffs every christian is known to say. I handle this with sarcasm. Its pointless changing the beliefs a person carries from childhood. I have a small circle of loyal friends who know i'm an atheist. We've been friends from childhood. We consider ourselves brothers. They do what most christians and muslims can't do, which is accepting and getting along with people who have different philosophies. I always tell them they're more agnostic/atheistic than they know. My parents have learned to be less judgemental. We've agreed to disagree. I've openly embraced my atheism. I really don't care about what people will think. I had one bad incident, my friends convinced me to go to church just for the fun of it, i went with them, someone i know from school recognised me as an atheist and raised an alarm, i was attacked, beaten, called agent of satan, my friends had to fight them off. They were also called names as you'd expect. My friends apologised later for everything tho. 1 Like 1 Share |

I've been an atheist since my final year at the university...I was very brillant and most people thought God wasted this talent on an atheist but I was quick to point out to them that no such *God* exists...I'm still an atheist and mum knows I hate church and I think Dad suspects too. My problem now is getting a girl to love..I wish I could really meet an atheist who understands me and loves me for me! Whenever I tell any female believer I don't believe in God..that's the end of the relationship lol! 1 Like |
