Nigerian international John Mikel Obi was upstaged over the weekend by another Premiership youngster Cesc Fabregas in the race to be crowned the finest young player in Europe.

The 19-year-old was the runaway winner of the Golden Boy award, presented by TuttoSport, based on a poll of leading writers across Europe.
Fabregas was named in top spot by 19 of the 30 judges, to finish with 253 points, ahead of second-placed Lionel Messi of Barcelona, on 179.
Tottenham's Aaron Lennon was the highest-placed English player, in fifth spot, with Theo Walcott joining him on the list in joint 16th.
Mikel’s failure to command a regular shirt at Chelsea, coupled by his lack of playing time at his former club Lyn Oslo, during his protracted transfer tussle, clearly contributed to his failure to add the European version to his African junior crown.
Incidentally, Mikel, voted the second best player at last year’s U-20World Cup in Holland, was the only Nigerian short listed for the junior version of the prestigious Ballon d’Or, which is given out by France Football.
