Smartphone users on the Android operating system are already familiar with Google Play Store but for the sake of those that are on the Apple's IOS platform I'll skim through what the Google Play Store is plus it's usefulness on the Android operating system.

Google Play Store is basically the Android application market where you can buy a slot to upload your personal application in order to make it available for download to Android users all over the world, you can also buy premium applications for your personal use. In summary, Google Play Store brings millions of interesting applications to your fingertips.

In the earlier versions of this app, downloading an app from Google Play Store is what I call a 'black market' simply because you are at the risk of using double the data you initially planned for the application download you initiated. What do I mean by this? It's simple, whenever you wanna download an application with additional data, you will only be shown the size of the apk file, that of the additional data will be hidden. This 'black market' download is now a thing of the past as Google's new update to the Play Store platform now makes the actual size of an application known to the user before download.

Google Playstore is set to make the size of application more transparent to its users by displaying the information more clearly.

Google, which initially only displayed the APK file size; will now show the actual file size in the Google Playstore and data used. “You can now see actual download sizes, not the APK file size, in the Play Store. If you already have an app, you will only see the update size. These changes are rolling out now,” said Anthony Morris, SWE Google Playstore in a blogpost. The new data algorithm rolled out by Google will also reduce the size of app updates and allow users to optimise parts of APK to make them smaller.

According to the press release from Google, it's new algorithm will ensure maximum compression of APK and it's additional files thereby aiding smartphone users on the Android platform save more in terms of mobile data.

In my opinion, this is a welcomed development in this part of Africa because of the exorbitant rate we buy data plans from our Internet Service Providers.
