Today is World Hepatitis Day, it is imperative that we get tested and checked out.
But here is a brief and precise read about Hepatitis.

Hepatitis aptly put is the inflammation of the liver. mostly by viral infection or otherwise damage due to alcohol or rarely by autoimmune diseases.


There are different kinds of hepatitis.some come and go unnoticed while others can be long lasting.
General Symptoms:
-itchy skin
-pale or grey-coloured excrete
-loss of appetite
-abdominal pain
-yellowing of the eyes
-dark urine
-joint or muscle pain.



Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It is usually gotten from the consumption of drink/food contaminated with the feaces of an infected person.
Hepatitis A is usually not harmful and passes after a few while, occasionally it can be serious.
Vaccination is advised to prevent hepatits A

Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is caused by the Hepatitis B virus and is spread mainly by contact with the blood of an infected person.(mother-child,unprotected sex,injecting drugs).
Hepatitis B can be can be fought off by the body's immune system. But children develop a long term infection. This is called chronic Hepatitis B and it can lead to Cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Vaccination against hepatitis B is recommended.

Hepatitis C
This is the most common type of viral Hepatitis which is spread through blood to blood contact with an infected person.(like in hepatitis b)
Hepatitis C usually comes with no symptoms and infected people are most of the time unaware. Some person's may be able to fight of the virus. But those who cannot, will have the virus in their blood for a long period of time(years). Currently there is no vaccine available for hepatitis C. It can be treated with anti-viral medications.

Hepatitis D
Caused by the Hepatitis D virus and can only be contracted by people already infected with hepatitis B.(hepatitis D requires the presence of hepatitis B virus to survive in the blood) Usually spread through blood.

Hepatitis E
Spread mainly through contaminated food/drinks that come in contact with the excrete of somebody infected with hepatitis virus. Hepatitis E is a mild type of hepatitis that the body usually fights off. But it can become chronic for people with suppressed immune system.

Alcohol Hepatitis
Caused by excessive consumption of alcohol over many years. It is recommended that you don't drink more than 14 units of alcohol in a week.

Autoimmune Hepatitis
A condition where the immune system attacks the liver. It is not clear what causes it but various forms of treatment can be given to manage the illness.

Get tested for hepatitis today. And get vaccinated too!
