Nafdac Disowns Poisonous Apple Scare by Ben13: 2:06pm On Sep 25, 2009
Throughout yesterday, the news was everywhere that Apple isn't safe for consumption and that Nafdac was aware. Today's news:

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disassociated itself from the text messages being circulated in the country warning the apples in the market are poisonous.

The Director General of NAFDAC Dr Paul Orhii said the message is not true adding that the agency does not send message of such importance through text messages neither has any of its staff been authorised to do so.

Dr Orhii, however, added that due to the speculation and uproar that the text has caused, he has already dispatched NAFDAC officers nationwide to be on the lookout for the said apples even as he explained that laboratory analysis are already being run on some apples to ensure that they were safe for consumption.

He said  NAFDAC issues public alert via radio, TV and print media and not through text messages.

He said NAFDAC is working with security Agencies to track down the initiators of this text message.

Text messages were circulated across the country warning Nigerians to be weary of eating apples as they were poisonous asking them also to warn their loved ones.

Meanwhile reports that some persons were hospitalised after eating the sapples were confirmed as false.
