Smart Nigerians Now Convert Drainage Water To Black Oil
Creative Nigerians have resorted to converting industrial wastes to asphalt/bitumen in Sari Iganmu area of Lagos state following their quest for daily bread.

The industrial waste is a constant stream of different chemicals, discharged by several companies around the locality.

These wastes, some of which are soluble in water, are conveyed through different drainage channels to meet at a considerably deep spot where they swirl and react.

It is from this spot that people scoop some streaming chemicals which they mix with diesel and a few other components in a seemingly even proportion, and then turn them vigorously until it becomes black, thick and sticky.

Our reporter who witnessed the process confirmed that the mixture which appears transparent at first undergoes speedy changes in colour and texture during the turning as a result of chemical reaction.

One of the people who simply gave his name as Musa told Nawhere.ng that 25kg of their black oil sells for N1,800.

He said that they sell mainly to local road contractors.

In his words: “the black oil is not well priced, considering that we spend money to process them.

“We sell to whomever that wants to buy but the people we can call costumers are local road contractors. They use it as bitumen to create asphalt concrete. The bigger construction companies don’t see us.

“25 litres sell for N1,800, but occasionally, we find people who pay more. The business doesn’t really pay as people think but it is better than doing nothing.” He said.
