My thought too. Other African countries are getting result without all these executive show off. Our govt officials are more papparazi inclined than the Hollywood stars.

Er... the Kenyans didn't develop their agriculture all by themselves. They were mainly subsistence farmers. The British and Ceylonese Indians ( tea) developed large scale agricultural an animal husbandry. Kenya grew into huge bio tech based agricultural because it was open to new ideas, it made inward investment easy and simple and removed unnecessary choke points.

But it didn't do it all by itself. There is nothing wrong with foreigners coming here if they bring their tech with them and provide training to Nigerians

although, the initiative is a welcomed one but my question is, are we gonna live solely or beef? Or must everyone become an herdsman? Or wil each household be given the cows to breed? Who is fooling who?. If they have all these initiative n mind, they dont need to ban importation when the intentions are still at its zygote stage. They should've allowed it grow before taking such measures.phew. Some people can rule. I rest my pen.

Interesting. You should know that a lot goes into a process. It's not always about government not coming through. Let's keep on the optimistic side of things.

How is the music going though?

The Kenyans had a blueprint for dairy sector, thats why they were successful. Development of any dairy sector of any country is a function of the following;

1. Having improved dairy animals locally in the Country.
2. A well-established artificial insemination (AI) service to enhance the multiplication of improved cattle.
3. Create awareness and Drive implementation of zero grazing system in cattle rearing.
4. Provision of technical and financial support to farmers.
5. Providing a framework with Milk Coys to absorb supplies from farmers.

MOUs should support the above framework and not the other way around. Thats why we are concern when FG continue to sign MOUs with Coys without providing a blue print. Its dead on arrival.

I guess there must have been a time when you were conceived, delivered, and grew up to a stage in life when you can comment on nairaland. All these stages I'm sure was over a period of years. It would have been very silly to expect you to achieve whatever you have today in the year of your conception or delivery.

Investors always want profit. Huge profits. Any sane investor from abroad coming to invest in a place with unstable economic policies, no light & poor judiciary must be tempted by massive gains.

If not, it will all end with MoU. MoUs are 100 for 1 Naira. Aside the photo opportunity, very hard to see results.

kenya has a yearly exibition called kenya gricultural show in different parts of kenya in which the president has to attend all of them, which culmunates to the final which is held in nairobi called nairobi international agricultural show...... different farmers compete with theire cows while learning best practices from each other, they compete for the best breeder, best cow, best for meat, stuff like that, they also auction the cows and sell them to differenyt markets for cross breeding and farmers who dont have enough knowledge get to learn first hand from the best

look at this orgernisation in kenya, how they have established themselves with research

and breeding of the borana spicies cow

I write as a fellow Kenyan, Chairman of the Boran Cattle Breeders and a Boran Breeder.
Dr Ndemo quite rightly states that the Boran originates in East Africa. The animals from the Horn of Africa have been selected by pastoralists over centuries to suit their requirements and environment.
In turn, these have been improved by commercial farmers over the last 90 years or so to produce the top class cattle that we see on some of our commercial ranches today. This includes the Borans in South Africa.
In fact, most of the South African Borans have been bred from stock that has come directly from Kenya.
The South Africans are constantly revisiting us in Kenya to look for new genetics, and through the Boran Cattle Breeders Society (BCBS) which is our own Kenyan society and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy Quarantine Facility, we are capable of producing high quality embryos and semen for export and local consumption.
The only thing the South Africans can beat us on is their publicity machine. Be assured that our Society encourages ranchers to purchase stock from the pastoralists in N.E. Kenya, to enhance the gene pool for the breed and upgrade these by selective breeding to produce the best rangeland converters in the world.
THE LARGEST SELECTION
The Boran in Kenya is alive, well and second to none. You certainly do not have to go to South Africa or anywhere else to find them.
Kenya still has by the largest selection of Borans, original and improved, from which to choose. We might have fewer registered animals than South Africa but so many of our unregistered animals are truer type Borans than a large percentage of the South African registered animals, which are in fact crossbreeds.
We also have fewer breeders registering their animals but ours are true commercial cattlemen rather than people who work in other professions and who are hobby farmers.
The Boran in South Africa has commanded such high prices in comparison to other breeds because it is “trendy” to keep them and many of the owners are not farmers who depend on their cattle for their livelihood.
Having said that, there are also many true cattle men in South Africa who have seen the benefit of breeding Borans because of their ability to produce in harsh conditions.
In addition, our Senior Breed Inspectors select suitable bulls which stand at the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre in Nairobi where semen is collected and stored and is available for anyone to purchase.
They have thousands of straws from many good bulls dating back from as far back as the 1970s to bulls which are standing there today.
FATTENED IN FEED LOTS
I also take issue with the idea that size matters. Big is not necessarily best.
The BCBS recognises that the Boran is an adaptable animal and that breeders should be breeding for their own conditions, not necessarily following the lead of the US or for that matter the rancher in Laikipa or Naivasha.
You will therefore see marked differences in size between these animals and those bred in Kitale and Makueni.
You must remember that in the US and other countries, the vast majority of the animals slaughtered are fattened in feed lots, with maize as the main constituent of the diet or on cultivated pastures. Those animals would either not survive on our rangelands or at best perform poorly.
It needs to be remembered that Kenya is a net importer of grain, and the cost of maize is too high to be feeding ruminants on a large scale, which is why our Borans are range-fed.
Those of us that have surplus grain can use it, while those without can utilise natural pastures of even very low quality and still produce top quality beef.
You will see individual members of our Society also breeding Charolais and Aberdeen Angus cattle, among others. If you were to visit their properties, however, you would see that these are kept on the better grazing while the Borans are utilizing the poorer areas and performing comparably with the Bos taurus breeds.
This year alone, we have exported semen to Zambia, live animals to Tanzania and Uganda. As we speak there is a top stud bull from Ol Pejeta being exported to Malawi and 34 heifers and 14 bulls from the Woragus Stud to Malawi.
Please feel free to visit the BCBS website

Whew... I hate to quote people and i'd rather just give my opinion but why that question? "Are we. Gonna live solely on beef? Or will each household be given cows to breed? "

Is it pessimism that prompted these questions? Why do we refuse to see anything good in the efforts of the govt of the day?

In my own opinion, apart from creating jobs for farmers in terms of cattle rearing, dairy farming has huge potentials; it goes beyond milk production. What of our candy/sweets industry? I see this as a quantum leap towards ensuring food security/stability in nigeria. Milk is about the cheapest food you can get in the US.

Again, I see this move as an interesting way of getting a greater percentage of our illiterate northerners educated in one form or the other. This will get them engaged. Mind you, it is only a matter of time before we hear the news that an indigenous company sets up its dairy plant and begins to compete with Nestlé, Friesland, Arla, promisador etc.

The value chain you can derive from agriculture is so long that in fact a booming agricultural sector will stimulate some areas of industrialisation in nigeria. Albeit, I would say we should not be naive, Nigeria's population is about to experience another explosion by 2050 and food security should be the least of our concerns then (look at the United States of America today, I can boldly tell you that many families are saving more because of cheap food).

As regards importation ban, i'd say that not until we (Nigerians) are pushed to the wall, we would like to import even the air we breathe. I remember those days when my rich neighbours would brag about taking imported milk and when our uncles came around too and brought things for us, we would brag too; that is how crazy we are about imported things.
Very soon, Nigerian rice will flood market, leathers and other agricultural products will follow suit.

As a yoruba adage says, A hungry man is a desperate man. When you are hungry, nothing else matters.

We should just learn and tap from Kenya and how their govt, bank, international NGO gives grant and easy acess to loan to Kenya diary farm.
Actually, the dairy sector in Kenya had always been small holder driven and followed a pattern similar to that of other agricultural commodities like sugar, coffee and tea whereby a central factory collects and processes for onward distribution. The game changer occurred in 2002 when the new government decided on a deliberate path to develop the sector with a view to modernising it. You might not believe it, but the prior regime followed policies that stymied growth in the sector, nearly killing it entirely by the year 2002. God being always great, rescued the small holder in time (most have less than 5 cows by the way) when the new regime pursued a path that grew the sector. It must be remembered that most kenyan communities have age old practice of keeping family cows for a vast range of purposes not least milk production, so the new way simply leveraged onto this to grow something meaningful.

Another oft unmentioned factor in dairy success in kenya is the overwhelming consumer preference for liquid (as opposed to powdered) milk. And the demand for it is high because we consume alot it. We drink tea at the slightest excuse, and many want milk in their tea. Also, other milk products like sour milk(i believe it is called foro de nono, excuse my bad spelling ) etc, that are consumed widely. I have asked in another thread of the consumer preference in milk in Nigeria, and i get the impression most people like things like peak milk etc which are condensed or powdered, and therefore require reconstitution. Here, that is abomination. If there exists a sustained production and a critical mass if people in future that can assure production and consumption of liquid milk ,that is the way to go i. e develop milk drinking culture now. A situation whereby there is alot of milk but little consumption might be like selling sand to saudi arabia!!!!

The breeds used in milk production are also critical. Know your region and seek advice from veterinary doctors on whether they can withstand heat or parasites /vectors - especially tsetse fly. Its no use trying to use a Holstein where they cannot survive. Other good milk breeds exist e. g jerseys and their crosses with indegenous cows. Better still, a super cow for all nigeria that can produce, say 15 litres /day can be developed This can and has been done elsewhere.

That being said, i hope and pray the new direction in Nigeria will bear fruit. My feeling is that it should seek to empower as many people as possible. i. e be inclusive. It should be smallholder centred and not look like a mega project kind of approach.
