Why Do Yoruba Elders Love To Be Greeted With Prostration? by Nobody: 11:14am On Aug 20, 2016 |
I am not here to attack the yoruba race.I have being greeting several yoruba elders i come across without prostrating, they would ignored my greetings. But when I bend my head and arm and shoulders before greeting them later they would reply.I had worked in a company that was owned by a yoruba man before. Each time i greet him he would snubbed me.Until one day that he held my ear and twisted it,and said i had no respect. He said in yorubaland they greet an elder with prostration.I am not a yoruba.Besides, prostrating before greeting is a culture not respect.I know most yoruba children who prostrate before they greet an elder, meanwhile they are not respectful. So my yoruba guys, must a non yoruba person prostrate before they greet a yoruba elder? |

OP your right was abused. In a work environment greetings are done formally and not the traditional way. For your boss to demand your prostrate and greet him in the office makes me to wonder the level of his exposure. |

Love Machine: Since you're not Yoruba you're not obliged to participate in their tradition. Lagos is a multi-ethnic and free society to stress that. Nobody should impose their culture on you except in certain cases. What they are doing is imposing their culture on someone who is non-yoruba. Next time greet them as you would normally. If they don't respond, don't even think twice about it. If they respond, good. If they complain, tell them you're not Yoruba. After a while they'll get used to you that way. Don't change yourself for anybody. 1 Like 1 Share |

XieXie: So, when Asians/Japanese take a low bow in office environments or when white expatriates conform to the practice of their employment offices/business partners by taking a bow before handshake their rights are being abused abi? French people or Arabs peck one another on the cheek twice or thrice as a form of greeting, In Nigeria we don't and it might even look odd doing that. Why do people like you think that by conforming with the prevailing norms in the environment they find themselves, they are somehow being abused? That is just silly baseless pride. 3 Likes 1 Share |

YonkijiSappo:ur country is heterogeneous in ethnicity.... Whatever form of greetings that obtains in one corner like yours should not be made to be the norm in an office setting where people of different ethnic origins work together. Mumu. 1 Like |

XieXie: Well, that is the societal norm for a lot of Lagos residents and indigenes which has as a matter of fact found its way into the office. Making it an office norm in the Federal state of Lagos. Btw: How do women greet their elders in Igbo culture? Do they just look them in the eye and for example just blurt our: "Thank You" or "Hey! good morning"? Because I see that most Nigerian women genuflect slightly at the knee these days to show appreciation or greet elders/superiors.... Is that a dominating interference of Yoruba culture? 1 Like |

XieXie: You haven't even asked him what kind of environment he is employed in... maybe it is a formal or informal/white collar job. When he looses his bricklaying or plumbing job, you will come here and say "that guy make plenty sense joor"... 1 Like |

YonkijiSappo:oga read his post again " yoruba and postulate" In Igbo culture it is customary for women to slightly kneel when greeting an elder. As if you don't know.... No Igbo man will demand with insolence that a non Igbo lady greet him that way. They understand that the Igbo culture is foreign to the other person. They can only tell the person this is how you greet an elder in my tribe but will never insist or ignore the person if they are not greeted in that way. |

It's a mark of respect for them.....personally, it looks cool to me Outside their territory, it shouldn't be made mandatory, especially to the non yorubas 2 Likes 1 Share |
