Okay, you don’t have to shoot yourself on the foot for not getting pregnant at an expected period; all you need do is relax and get to the root of the problem. According to a chief consultant, Obstetrician and gynaecologist at National Hospital, Dr Olabunmi Ladipo, while there are a number of reasons for your inability to conceive at a time, anxiety could be the father of them all.

The doctor explained that many women become overly anxious some times, just barely three to six months of marriage when their expectations do not match with the reality. At times it could be pressure from in-laws and or spouse as they question the ability of the woman to conceive.

Though the woman may get more worried, Dr Ladipo advised that both couples are meant to see their doctor as to fully ascertain the real cause of the delay.

He further stated that age is a primary factor as younger couples still have some time to make babies than older couples where the woman is already 35 and above.

For the male, it could be that:

The number of sperm you produce is low or sperm mobility may have decreased.
The testicles may be infected

It is a pointer to cancer of the testicles.

Trauma such as testicular torsion (a case where the testis twists and cause damage to the testes and affect the sperm).

You have an obstructive Azoospermia (a condition where the sperm does not get to the semen even after the testicle might have produced it).

You have an ejaculation disorder, where it comes too quickly or where the semen is ejaculated into the bladder.

For the female, causes could be:

Ovulation disorder; a situation where the woman finds it difficult to release eggs may be due to the inability of the ovaries to produce eggs, overactive or underactive condition of your thyroid hormones and a situation where woman’s ovaries stop working before she clocks 40.

Results from infection such as untreated or not properly treated sexually transmitted disease, infection from previous abortion or one contracted after previous child birth.

The growth of fibroid is also one cause as it may affect the development of the embryo on the womb (fibroid are non cancerous growth that develops from under the lining of the wall of the womb, right into the middle of the womb).

Side effects of some medication such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin and others classified as Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), drugs taken for the treatment of oedema, psychosis and cancer.

Blockade of the fallopian tubes; with this, the egg cannot travel along the fallopian tubes where it is being fertilized before it is finally planted in the womb for continuous growth, therefore, there may be difficulty conceiving naturally. Whatever the case may be, you need to find out from your doctor and for proper medical advice on what to do.
