Nice one. I did an experiment on how long cucumber could last after harvest, so l bought one that was very fresh and no cut on it on the 23rd day of December 2015 then had it placed on the counter top of my kitchen with a room temperature of about 18 degrees.

I finally ate it on the 31st of March, 2016 and the taste was okay.

I suggest farmers to be careful when harvesting to avoid cuts on the cucumber, so one will not be forced to sell off and lower price.

Great harvest. Please why did you choose not to stake the vines. can you enlighten us on the advantages of not staking the vines. Also the benefits of staking. Thanks

It did before l caved into the temptation of juicing it. cheesy

An under 20 degree room temperature extends its shelf life. Our farmers can have this constructed to store their cucumber for weeks while they wait for buyers. It only needs water poured into the PVC pipe so it soaks the jute bag wrapped round it in order to keep the inside cool.

I am doing such experiment too. I think it also depends on when it is harvested. Those harvested at full maturity (when the flowers have fallen off) tend to last longer

When at full maturity, it is. I ask did it with butternut squash, bought it same day with the cucumber (23rd December 2015) and cooked it first week of July, 2016.

why am not staking the vine is d location in southern parts of d state d stake them because of relatively low amount of rainfall but where I am in Jos east there is high level of rainfall which makes the cucumber plant to spread wide over d farm and it inhibits more water that's why its fatter and bigger than d ones from other parts of the state generally staking doesn't happen in jos east also putting in consideration the amount of time to be spent. Hope it helps my little experience na jejely

The temperature where it is kept is the determining factor.

But u should not compare the weather in kenya with our weather here sha. The weather may be the main reason why yours lasted so long.

I can't compare as here is way cooler, even right now am indoors and having my stockings on and drinking hot tea at past 2.P.M!

Our farmers should provide cooler environment for their harvests. Let me use the local cooling box l attached in an earlier post as an example as in Somalia the weather there is oven like, the cooler box is what is being used in some communities donated by donor agencies to cool down the temperature of the harvested fruits and vegetables thereby extending its freshness.

Boxes made with charcoal stuffed around and which is constantly watered keeps fruits and vegetables fresh.

When care is taken during harvest and stored in a cool environment......It will last longer.

Our farmers and traders are so used to stacking cucumbers in sacks, that is a big NO,NO as the shelf life of those cucumbers have been seriously compromised.
